Following a dramatic six-week hearing, the jury at Southwark crown court convicted Harris of 12 counts of indecent assault, from 12 initial charges dating over nearly two decades from 1968. The prosecution presented the 84-year-old Australian-born star as an arrogant and reckless serial molester who treated his victims as "sexual objects to be groped and mauled when he felt like it". "He targeted fans who were mesmerised by his fame and talents," the prosecution QC, Sasha Wass, told the jury. "He was a children's entertainer and they were beguiled by his singing and painting. And the penalty of their admiration was to suffer sexual assault." The court heard evidence from 10 different women about alleged assaults by Harris, none of whom knew each other aside from a mother and daughter who claimed they were groped together. Many of the women described similar experiences, Wass said, and it was absurd to suggest this was just coincidence given the disparate and unconnected group of alleged victims. Harris's lawyers, however, insisted that the standard of proof was not nearly high enough. "Making allegations loudly and forcefully does not make them true," defence counsel Simon Ray told the court.
I still don't want to believe it. :(
What a sick bastard. Shame too, used to like a few of his songs.
Whatever his status, at least his crimes finally came to roost back home on his head.
I could never have imagined it. He's quite the icon here in Australia
he assaulted a lot of kids with his didgeridoo, and they played with it too
I used to love him on Animal Hospital :(
No. I can't believe it. I wont. :( fuck
When Rolf Harris was first sent to court, my parents were really concerned about weather or not the allegations were true. When they were in their twenties, their friend's best mate (and a few others) had broken into Rolf's house, and found "indecent pictures" but were actually found by him. He basically told them that even if they told anybody, no one would believe them because he was famous. Obviously at the time, my parents didn't really believe it, said friend who told them was pretty reliable, but anything that comes from a friend of a friend is often bullshit. I guess it was true after all.
he assaulted a lot of kids with his didgeridoo, and they played with it too
Can you tell what it is yet?

The noises he made while playing the wobble board always weirded me out
he assaulted a lot of kids with his didgeridoo, and they played with it too
He got them to tie his kangaroo down.
Who is this guy? I presume he's some sorta AUS/UK-famous performer.
Was a hugely popular children's entertainer that was massively popular with every generation. Also a singer/songwriter, painter and TV presenter.
"indecent assault" sounds silly is there such a thing as "decent assault" just call it assault jeez
Assault refers to a different crime; usually a threat of violence against someone combined with an apparent ability and readiness to carry said threat out.
Assault refers to a different crime; usually a threat of violence against someone combined with an apparent ability and readiness to carry said threat out.
You haven't quite got that right, that'd probably be classed as a "Threat to Kill". In the eyes of English law,
English law provides for two offences of assault: common assault and battery. Assault (or common assault) is committed if one intentionally or recklessly causes another person to apprehend immediate and unlawful personal violence. Violence in this context means any unlawful touching, though there is some debate over whether the touching must also be hostile. Confusingly, the terms "assault" and "common assault" often encompass the separate offence of battery, even in statutory settings such as s 40(3)(a) of the Criminal Justice Act 1988.
There are a significant number of other offences that are classed under "Assault" but carry heavier penalties, such as Assault of an Immigration Officer, and also "Aggravated Assault" which has a number of sub-offences (of which I believe indecent assault / sexual assault is classed under). See the Wikipedia page on Assault for more information. I'm not a lawyer, though, so I probably just monumentally cocked that up.

His crimes are horrible and he should be punished what pisses me off though is people tearing down his artwork and destroying it defacing his plaque to all the good things he did do
Still think it's Bullshit they took his aria award off of him.
Still think it's Bullshit they took his aria award off of him.
not at all
so this is basically like Mister Rodgers being outed as a kiddy diddler? (for us non-aussies)
I went to an exhibition of his work in 2012 while he was in the building (though I didn't see him up close). I loved it, even walked right up to the portrait he did of the Queen. I always thought he was a great man, it's quite devastating to find out how wrong I was.
