Judge Orders Extended Voting Hours in Hartford, CT
A Hartford judge has decided to extend voting hours to 8:30 p.m. at two city polling places hampered by delays and missing registration lists early Tuesday morning.
The extended hours will apply to the Batchelder School at 757 New Britain Avenue and United Methodist Church at 571 Farmington Avenue, according to the judge. Registered voters lined up by 8:30 p.m. at those two polling stations will be allowed to vote.
"It was the ruling of electoral officials, either monitors or registrars, that denied people the opportunity to vote in an alternative fashion when the voting lists were not ready at 6 a.m.," the judge explained, referring to voters who were stalled or turned away while waiting for lists to arrive.
The hearing at Hartford Superior Court began around 2:45 p.m. and dragged on for hours after Gov. Dan Malloy's campaign filed a complaint seeking to extend voting hours to 9 p.m. at affected polling places in Hartford.
Malloy campaign attorney William Bloss said at least 10 of the city's 24 polling places opened as late as 7:30 a.m. because voter lists weren't delivered on time. All Connecticut polls were legally required to open at 6 a.m. Tuesday.
At some polling places, including the Hartford Seminary, voters wrote their names, addresses and phone numbers on blank pieces of paper before receiving ballots. Moderators looked at voter identification and placed the ballots in an "auxiliary pile" to be checked against the list when it arrived, a witness for the Foley campaign said in court.
Obviously the democrats trying to commit election fraud.
but for real this seems pretty normal. I can't see a problem with this
If there were valid issues that inhibited people from voting, then the hours should be extended.

Really the day of the election itself inhibits people from voting. Normal working hours on a tuesday. People have work, School, etc. The only people with enough free time to vote are old people. They ought to make election day saturday. Or make two election days; one tuesday, one saturday, and then conclude voting after the last day of elections.

There are already enough ways to allow everyone who wants to vote, to vote.
- Absentee voting takes away any excuse one might have.
- Polling stations are open for 12 hours. So there is always time either before or after work for people with full time jobs.
- Counties are allowed to have early voting if they want it. So the possibility for multiple days is already there.

It's funny that you should mention that only because Dan Malloy (D) and Tom Foley (R) ran against each other in 2010, as well. In 2010, polling stations in Bridgeport ran out of ballots, and a judge ordered those stations in Bridgeport to remain open until 10pm. By 8pm, Tom Foley was leading by 8,000 votes. At 10pm, though, after the voters in Bridgeport had been able to vote, Dan Malloy won by a measly 7,000 votes. Many accuse Malloy of election fraud then, although it's unlikely.
Nonetheless, it'd be nice if we could get through an election in this state without these problems.
