The chain has 528 stores and employs 4,190 staff. Deloitte, the accountancy firm which will now take over running the firm, said Blockbuster would keep trading while it tries to find a buyer. Music chain HMV and camera-seller Jessops both went into administration earlier this month. It is not yet known what will happen to HMV's branches and 4,500 staff. Unusually, all of Jessops' 187 branches closed within days of administrators being appointed. Electricals chain Comet collapsed before Christmas. "We are working closely with suppliers and employees to ensure the business has the best possible platform to secure a sale, preserve jobs and generate as much value as possible for all creditors," said Lee Manning, from Deloitte's Restructuring Services practice. "The core of the business is still profitable and we will continue to trade as normal in both retail and rental whilst we seek a buyer for all or parts of the business as a going concern. "During this time gift cards and credit acquired through Blockbuster's trade-in scheme will be honoured towards the purchase of goods." The first Blockbuster store in the UK opened in 1989. In the past few years it has faced increasing competition from online-only rental firms which post DVDs to subscribers and, more recently, from streaming services which allow users to download films and TV series. It has closed more than 100 outlets in the past few years.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-21047652
Film-rental company @Blockbuster_UK goes into administration, putting nearly 4,200 jobs & 528 shops at risk
https://twitter.com/BBCBreaking/status/291553055940419584
Let's hope the admins won't be Deloittes.

I expected it to happen a long time ago, but there you go. Every time I walk past my local Blockbuster it is completely empty.
These places are just obsolete and didn't jump on the internet bandwagon soon enough. Sad to see em go, but I haven't been in a Blockbuster since the 90s.

They were in administration before if I recall rightly, which caused them to backtrack and close many of their stores. Unfortunately, they no longer have a purpose with digital distribution.

I like my local Blockbuster :( me and my girlfriend always call in like every other weekend for a few films to watch when bored, it beats the cinema prices and beats buying a dvd that i'll only watch once, but recently we moved onto Netflix and stuff so you can really see where Blockbuster lost out.
I thought it had gone into administration ages ago.
I thought it had gone into administration ages ago.
That was Blockbuster US, they liquidated IIRC
Good luck... R.I.P. Blockbuster </3
Shame, i still rent xbox games from there. At least i can look forward to the clearance sales if there are any
Feels weird. I remember the Saturdays when me and my mother or father would head out to the video store and rent the coolest looking VHC or DVD, whatever it was, it had to look cool with a man with a gun on front. Preferably Schwarzenegger
This is normal. They couldn't adapt to society. Internet and Netflix pretty much makes Blockbuster obsolete.
Maybe if I wait long enough they'll forget about that 10 quid late fee as well...
both HMV and Blockbuster are awful. They had a good history but it's time to go. When you're harsh to customers and deliver awful service, you become deemed pointless in this day and age.
We used to go to Blockbusters every weekend to rent out games and a few movies, but that must have been like a 8-10 years ago. Every time I go past it on the bus it's empty.
Doesn't seem too off to see GAME back in administration in the near future now.
In our town blockbuster had this big area but now it was cut back so some gym could use it and now they're smaller But video rental is still popular here, the main big competitor is videoezy and network video, they haven't dropped on the online train but the internet speed in places make downloading a pain in the ass and we have streaming service, most just buy off iTunes
I honestly never knew they had that many stores. I thought they were just a slim lined ghost of what they were - it makes it more tragic.

Seriously, that shit was so cash.
We have a blockbuster in our town and it's a shit hole. Everything is twice the price of Tesco.
So if the blockbuster moves out in my town, I could set up a gaming PC store there.
So if the blockbuster moves out in my town, I could set up a gaming PC store there.
Probably would be far more successful as well.
It's all my fault, I got a lovefilm subscription and stopped supporting my local blockbuster.
It's all my fault, I got a lovefilm subscription and stopped supporting my local blockbuster.
Lovefilm has a horrible online movie selection, use Netflix.
Blockbuster should have done what Lovefilm (or whatever it's called) did where you pay X amount per month to rent X amount of DVDs and when you bring one back you can just take another. I'd have used that.
Lovefilm has a horrible online movie selection, use Netflix.
Netflix doesn't deliver or do games as far as I know. I'm not all that bothered by streaming.
Wait. You guys in the UK still had Blockbuster? Goddamn.
