• Upgrading my computer to run BF3?
    27 replies, posted
Hey, I got a cheap prebuilt (I know, but it was on offer) desktop, and I downloaded the BF3 beta previously and was only getting about 25fps on low settings. I'm on kind of a tight budget, so the cheaper the better really. Could somebody please suggest how to upgrade my computer to run BF3 on med-high? Specs are as follows: MEDION® AKOYA® P5315 D (MD 8351) AMD Athlon™ II X4 640 Quad-Core Processor (3.0 GHz) AMD Radeon™ HD 6450 DirectX®11 graphics card with 512 MB, DVI-D, HDMI- (HDCP support) and D-SUB VGA 1.0 TB (1000 GB) hard drive 4GB DDR3 SDRAM memory Windows® 7 Home Premium 64 bit Thanks.
Motherboard?
Unfortunately you are on the am3 socket, the cheapest way would be to get a phenom 955 and a 560ti, but I'd rather suggest you switch to intel. And you would most likely have to upgrade the power supply too, as it is most likely shit. Post a budget first.
Motherboard?
athlon 640 is an am3 socket cpu, either am2+ or am3 motherboard
Budget will most likely be around £250 by Christmas. Thanks for the fast replies btw.
Then you are stuck with a 955. It is of course not a bad cpu, but there are better choices. But i would of course check for the exact model of your motherboard and post it here before. But then again, prices do drop. Rather make a new thread/bump this when you're actually going to buy it.
How would I go about doing that? Sorry, I'm just a computer newbie haha. I tried dxdiag and right clicking My Computer, but nothing.
I'm not sure if it is written on it, but what socket it has should at least say on the front of it next to the cpu heatsink. Open it up and check. If it does say "AM3", then you're good.
Argh, struggling to find it. Where abouts on the motherboard should it say? [editline]11th November 2011[/editline] Found something, says N1996 next to the heatsink, nothing about AM# though. Google'd it and found the MSI N1996 motherboard, does that sound right?
No, not at all. If it would be so, then you'd be on a pentium4. If the computer came with a manual or something along those lines, then you could browse through that. Or try speccy.
Bah, would it help if I took a picture? I'm hopeless with PC hardware to be honest.
Download CPU-Z and it well tell you your socket motherboard http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html On the right it will say english setup 1.58

Naos, it says Socket AM3 (938), that's what we're looking for right?
Love you man, thanks. Naos, it says Socket AM3 (938), that's what we're looking for right?
That's exactly what you're looking for, You can get any AM3 socket CPU but not AM3+ so you can any of the athlon II or phenom II CPU's, So I'd get the 955 phenom II x4 and a 550ti or 560 and a new PSU, naos should be able to help you on that. edit: Naos, make sure you look at combo deals since you didn't do that with LOL PWND

The 560 is also at the bare minimum 40£ more expensive, good luck finding such a deal on ebuyer.

What wattage is your PSU now? edit: I also can't help you cause I don't know any reliable PC part sites that use euros.
I don't believe that the performance jump between the 560 and 6850 is significant enough for the 40+£ extra, if you want more performance for the buck then you'd have to shell out a bit more, at a 250£ budget a 6850 is the highest you can go.
350W
350W
Yea you def need a new PSU for the GPU you plan on getting.

What website did you use for the price up btw?
ebuyer the gpu is 10£ cheaper on scan, but the powersupply is 3£ more expensive and the cpu is not even in stock
Alright, thanks a bunch for all the help guys (:
It is cheaper on scan.co.uk, but the cpu is not even in stock, but they might restock before christmas so it might just be worth checking it out
Ah, thanks :D VAT sure is a bitch though.
So the prices have gone up since my last post, would http://www.ebuyer.com/124922-arctic-power-500w-psu-p2-arctcic-500td be as good as the corsair PSU?

Would this work? I heard that BF3 isn't THAT CPU intensive. I'm strapped for cash now and this is roughly £70 cheaper than the previous build comes to.
BF3 is very CPU intensive, more so than most games - where did you hear it wasn't?
