Recently I've been wanting to expand my Photography Hobby by purchasing a better, much more professional camera. Right now I'm using a Fujifilm Finepix S1000fd.
It's a great little point and shoot. It has a lot of more advanced functions like ISO, White Balance, Shutter Speeds, Aperture, etc. But I want more, I want something that will do a lot better; something like a nice DSLR. I've got a few SLR Film cameras from Nikon and they're nice, but I want to have a Digital SLR simply because it's more cost effective.
So far I've looked at the Canon EOS Rebel XSi, the Nikon D40-90, Canon EOS 40D (I believe), and a few others. Most are great cameras from reviews, and I'm not too concerned with cost, but I do want something less than $1,500.00 USD. Also, if you have the camera you suggest could you please discuss why you personally like it and any quirks, etc.
If you got a Nikon SLR I'd suggest getting a Nikon DSLR because you can use the lens' that you own already.
D40 is abit outdated now from what magazines tell me. The D5000 is 'in' at the moment. (Also according to the magazine I have infront of me the D5000 exceeds the other entry level cameras in image quality and price)
If you're looking for intermediate the D90 is pretty good (or so i've heard)
Hmm, sounds good. So a positive look on the D90? I'm willing to spend a little more on a camera that is gonna last for a while. I know how quick companies release new models that add a little more the last version didn't have.
I have the Canon EOS 20D. I love my 20D. :haw:

How is it? Any quirks and such?
Recommending canon EOS40D all the way if you're going high end.
Canon, no question about it. I haven't owned a Nikon camera, so I can't say that mine is better or worse, just that when I bought my camera, it was based on what a friend of mine, a professional photographer, told me.
I wanted "a high-end, yet affordable camera for an amateur" - So I got the Canon EOS400D. Next camera is a Canon EOS 5D Mk.II, which of course is the most badass, also in price! :v:
In short, my opinion is Canon, either 1000D (great camera, not so expensive etc), or of course the 40D, a jump up from there..
All sound quite good. What differences are there from other cameras?
I've owned both Nikon and Canon (although my Canon was a Film SLR) and I am much happier with my Nikon. Also I would recommend the D90 over the D5000. The D5000 has a few extra features that don't really interest me and for only a bit more you get a very solid camera.
As beatzdawg mentioned, since you already own a Nikon, go with another because of lens compatibility. You can mount Nikon lenses on a Canon body with a special mount, but the opposite isn't true (Canon on Nikon).
Although you can't really go wrong with either brand.
I've narrowed my choices a bit, but I still wonder what the difference between many Nikon and Canon DSLR's are, other than prices.
Main difference I can see is ergonomics. Check out how each camera feels in your hands and pick the one that feels the most intuitive for you.

The main difference is software and ergonomics. I personally like the feel and control of a canon much much better compared to a nikon.
I've tried out the Nikons at BestBuy and Wolf Camera. I prefer Canon's button layout as well.
I might go with a good Canon. I have checked a few out at Wolf Camera, next time I go I'll ask if I can give it a test.
Rebel XS. best camera ever and one of the cheapest and most popular ones.
How's the features on it? I really want to take amazing quality photos. How does it act in low light?
Great features, 7 point auto focus. Could use a bit more but I like manual anyways and the autofocus system is well managed.
Amazing quality photos. I seen comparisons with like the 40D and looks exactly the same with iso crops 100% and all that
It feels well in your hands.
AND ITS AMAZING IN LOW LIGHT.
I love night pictures with this shit.

Absolutely gorgeous. I might actually aim at getting this. I love the night shots. I always have a problem getting beautiful shots in low light without a high ISO over-graining the image.
The iso noise is really controlled. I didn't even have a tri-pod haha.
I'd say the best one for you would be the Canon EOS 40D, since you're willing to pay that much. I have a 50D; which is the next model after it, and I love it. Just a few differences between the two and I have a few friends with a 40D that like it a lot.

I made this thread a while ago.

Best camera ever is a rather bold statement. I have a Nikon D60 and i've never thought to myself that I felt it was missing anything.
Also I have never noticed much different between Nikon and Canon shape of body, when it comes down to it you'll still be supporting it by holding the grip on the side and supporting the lens.
I also like a camera with a good weight to it. Not too heavy, but not too light. I do want it to be comfortable in my hands too.

I can't think of any heavy DSLRs, the 40d isn't that heavy but all my friends who i let hold it tell me it's heavy.
That sounds good. My camera the Fujifilm Finepix is ok on wight but it's still a crappy point and shoot that I want to eventually replace.
The rebel is a nice weight.
Trust me I felt complete with this camera.
And Canon always has the best lenses made for it.
If you wanna pay 400 more dollars for a 40D and take like the same exact pics then get that.
Or get a Rebel XS a 50 mm 1.8 lens and maybe a telephoto lens

The 40D has way more features than a rebel, especially noteworthy noise reduction on high iso level shots, with grain tolerable up to 3200 iso. Plus a better auto mode and three programmable custom settings.
So the 40D is a good choice?
I would recommend a D40, find a discount on a lens and cam and you've got one hell of a cam.

only thing is the motor for focusing is in the lens, so you have to find a compatible lens or else deal with manual focus
I don't know, the 40D seems quite impressive. It has a lot of the things I really want in a camera.
