Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has won the TIME 100 reader poll, topping not only his rival Hillary Clinton but also a host of world leaders and cultural figures for who TIME readers think should appear on our annual list of the most influential people in the world.
Sanders finished with 3.3% of the total “yes” votes when the poll closed at midnight on Thursday, edging out the South Korean boy band Big Bang’s 2.9%, Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s 2.2%, and President Obama’s 2%. Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Michelle Obama, Pope Francis and Leonardo DiCaprio round out the top 10. Clinton, Sanders’ opponent for the Democratic nomination, finished with 1% of the yes votes.
Sanders, who has long benefited from digitally active supporters, led the reader poll from the start. While he badly lags Clinton in winning the delegates needed to capture the presidential nomination, his populist rhetoric and emphasis on income inequality has allowed him to sustain a stronger-than-expected challenge to Clinton while also helping frame the debate in the Democratic contest.

The cult of personality is real here
Bernie isn't that influential. Pope Francis leads over a billion people, Yousafzai is a woman who is fighting for schools for women and has been shot for that, and Aung San Suu Kyi has been imprisoned for trying to bring democracy to Myanmar. In contrast, Bernie has only had 3 sponsored bills that became law, 2 of them to name post offices

So what is your point? That Bernie should lead billions under something like religion, or that he should be imprisoned in order for his points and ideas to actually become legit and not fueled by a ''cult of personality''?
Pretty unfair to say that, given that he is quite a new element in the American political system. I'd say his presence in the elections is something as notable as the pope leading over a billion people or fighting against tyranny in Myanmar.
And by the way, had he been supported by a cult of personality, his effect would be more similar to that of Donald Trump.

While it's not to be harsh on Sanders, but running a popular political campaign isn't quite on the same level as Aung San Suu Kyi, and leading a successful Democratic movement in a state, a state that has been ruled by an authoritarian military state for decades. It's like trying to compare Sanders with Nelson Mandela.

the only relevant comparison is pope francis. this isnt the TIME MOST MORAL PERSON poll, this is most influential. world leaders around the world have not been talking about any of these people consistently for the past several months. none of these people have been drawing crowds out of the woodwork. they absolutely have done "morally better" things, im not denying that. but influential? maybe in their local area, but nobody has been talking about these people on a global basis. they are absolutely not as influential.

I don't understand why you're trying to dismiss him based on things that get passed. That's a worthless way to evaluate him as a person. The cultural progress that he advocates and his ideas are unpopular in US politics. What do you think would be his success record? Are you really insinuating that success in modern US politics remotely implies you're a good person? If anything, I'd argue the opposite.
Ludicrous line of thinking there.

To ask people to vote for the most influential person in the world is kinda dumb anyway, Obama should basically win each time, if people actually voted according to influence.

I meant to edit good to be influential, it was left over from something I changed.
But this is still bullshit and sidesteps my overall point anyways. Judging him based off just passing bills is pointless in this context. He is influential in the humanities, being a political advocator for social progress. Of course his ideas won't pass. They hurt the pockets of the people who control the government.
Dismissing him because of numbers of whatever passed is ignoring the whole reason he's on the senate floor.

Bernie is, if nothing else, influencing the policies Hillary will have to go ahead with - that's still influence.
I would give it to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS. He's directly influenced a massive number of people through the creation of ISIS while also forcing a huge portion of the west to react to terror.

He's certainly been influential in the past year. He's gotten more young people than I can ever remember interested in politics and has caused a massive growth in the support for his policies and beliefs since only entering the public eye a few months ago. He's been a relatively huge story and has had quite the meteoric rise.
Also, "to be influential in the US, you have to get shit passed"? Cmon man, some of the most influential people in our countries history weren't even politicians. That statement bleeds ignorance.

How many bills did Clinton successfully shepherd into law as the chair of a Senate committee? Zero. Clinton did not chair any Senate committees during the three Congresses she served in because she did not accumulate enough seniority.
If you are looking for a presidential candidate with a proven record of beating partisan gridlock to get meaningful legislation passed in Washington, D.C., then Bernie Sanders deserves your support.
\
As a Senator, Clinton sponsored three bills that became law: S.3145, S.3613, and S.1241. The first of these renamed a highway in New York state, the second renamed a post office in New York City, and the third established the Kate Mullany National Historic Site in Troy, New York and authorized funding to set the site up.
During Sanders’ time in the Senate, he sponsored two bills that became law: S.885 and S.893. The first of these renamed a post office in Vermont. The second increased compensation for disabled veterans and their families.
While Sanders chaired the Senate’s Veteran Affairs committee during the 113th Congress (2013-2014), 13 of the committee’s bills became law. That may not sound like a lot until you realize that the Senate Veterans Affairs (VA) committee only passed 8.5 bills into law on average during each of the past 20 Congresses and that these 13 bills became law during the second least productive Congress in American history.
Maybe I'm ignorant, but why are our senators renaming post offices? Sounds like a local matter.
A cult of personality arises when an individual uses mass media, propaganda, or other methods to create an idealized, heroic, and at times worshipful image, often through unquestioning flattery and praise.
Definition of propaganda
oh my god this isn't "propaganda". clinton does the same thing and that's not even "propaganda".
[editline]40[/editline]
there's good propaganda, neutral propaganda, and bad propaganda.
good propaganda is advertisements encouraging you to vote in the next election.
neutral propaganda is comparing two viewpoints of two politicians in a truthful manner.
bad propaganda is the american government painting communism in a hellish light.
when you use the word propaganda you're implying that it's of equal to some of the "red menace" bullshit you saw in the mccarthy era because that's what propaganda means to the general masses.
if you told an average american citizen that coca cola is a propaganda shitting machine, they would think you're insane. by definition you would be right but by meaning you would be wrong.
I swear there's a name for using misleading language to your advantage. There should be if it isn't because this feels like some sort of fallacy. If I used the exact definition of every word, then I could in fact say correctly that my teacher molested me as a child because I didn't do my homework.
