I'm sure this game is great, but I can't get into any server with a decent ping. Either there's a version difference or servers are full.

A lot of old neotokyo server hosters like Agiel and Afr0 are making new servers, so it should be easier to get into a match now.
just tried a few minutes, it has aged a lot honestly
Did they ever fix the left lean around the corner bullshit? Cause that bug basically ruined the game for me.
Otherwise this game is an absolutely incredible mod. Things like the thermal vision aren't just filters. They are entirely different texture sets on things. So, you walk into a room, and everything that should be warm shows up as being warm. Things like a server rack, random pieces of equipment, etc. Then there were other little things. You don't have magic pants that reload your magazines for you. You get a certain number of magazines, and when you reload, you discard unused bullets in your current magazine, and ammo is quite limited. That trade off of reloading vs not running out of bullets later in the round is a choice that so few games are willing to force upon you.
If this game had been picked up by a decent studio and had some polish applied, it could have become very popular. Not CS/COD levels of popular, but it could have had an actual cult following. I don't feel like it aged all that well, but it had some really good concepts, and some top notch execution of them.

Also, there's some pretty damn good stuff in the soundtrack.

What was the point of that soundtrack anyways? I don't recall music actually playing in-game.
Expect more servers from now on, the dedicated server won't require Steam to host them anymore. Might as well a minor setback coming from the Source Engine 2006 branch.
Ghost in the Shell is awesome, Counter-Strike is decent, therefore this game here is quite good... however I just wish for me.
After playing Neotokyo when it released yesturday... I don't see much change from before, which disappoint me greatly because I expected alot of things to happen. I want to see this game get updated to a modern engine, I want to see steam workshop in this mod, I want to witness a single-player campaign of the game for the story... there many other things that I wish for since I'm a inspirational fan of ghost in the shell.
this game is so good and the art direction is stunning. my only complaint in this game is that the map lighting feels so static and flat.

Well it is five years old.
When it was new it looked great for a 2009 source mod. Some bits still look quite nice today, but it is very dated.
it would be really nice if they redid some of the first person weapon animations and updated the lighting on the maps

It was supposed to be put in but they either didn't try at all or just couldn't get it in for release.
Being on a newer branch would improve the game in many ways, both : rim light support, multi threaded, no border mode to name a few. But I agree, it does feel a bit bland and old coming from its release. But then again, being a free mod as it is, it's great to see it released on Steam after all these years. It's definitely good to see that, even after such a long time, the community would still be supportive in any way possible.
Really hope they'll be updating this. It has potential but is held back by its age and lack of additional features.

Wouldn't it be detrimental to the gameplay if there was background music anyways?
With it mostly being Counter-Strike I would imagine being able to hear footstep noises and other sounds is very important, and something that background music would interfere with.
Hopefully with the Steam release we'll see an increase in the playerbase. I've only logged onto it a handful of times, but every time it was a chore to find someone to play with. The gameplay can get stale at times, but the art direction & soundtrack are amazing. I'm very happy to see it get an official release.
There's a SHIT TON of servers running now.

Well then I know what I'm doing my next day off. :v:

There's literally only one developer that's working on Neotokyo right now and he was the guy who created the maps/textures/models. He isn't a programmer.
Most of the developers went their separate ways. Some of them are working on Contagion.
aw man. so no hope in kicking back the game into the newer engine? I'm glad they finally got it onto steam atleast
