Is it possible to put anything past 10.5 on this thing?
I am not opening it...
If not how do I put linux on it? I can't find a proper install guide for rEFInd and I'm not totally sure the processor is okay with the type of linux I'm putting on.
If I remember correctly it should run 10.6.8. Anything above that requires a CPU upgrade.
Linux will probably work mainly because strangely enough your model is Intel based. Mac mini's from that era were usually a PPC G4.
The only way to know for sure if a specific Linux distro works on your mac is to contact the dev's or to try it yourself.
It should be as easy as burning the DVD and boot from it by holding C when turning on the mac.

I'm going to need to put it on a stick, however what is your source that its capable of 10.6.8?
I tried looking around for some info on that, but what I turned up involved upgrading the computer to a different CPU.
I hope that 6 you typed isn't a typo. I'm currently running 10.5.8 and I'm not sure if I'm allowed past this version.
I am probably not going to be able to do this legitimately.
I managed to get rEFInd to install, I now have the option to boot to linux however when I tried to boot it said "No Boot"
I'm guessing this is just because the OS was 64 bit, since the USB drive was EFI capable.
So whatever OS I want I have to choose x86?
If the current OSX is 32 bit then you will most likely need 32 bit
