• Youtube's Content ID System Sucks!

Grrr. I have been making Youtube videos for not long, and am pissed at the Youtube system. Recently I recorder a test, a TEST of OBS on my rig recording Portal 2 at 1080p 60fps shown here. But, guess what? Youtube recognized the ending of the video playing Want You Gone, which was included in the game I payed for, and now it is marked down as monetized by the record group. WTF?! I spent money on the game. I rendered it on my expensive computer. I edited it! The I uploaded it to Youtube and it marks it down as monetized! Any solutions? For that video I understand, since it doesn't really qualify for fair use, and I don't want to get permabanned. But for this video, it qualifies for fair use. Am I right? I spent hours remixing the original song with the vocals of another remix by someone else. I am not making profit nor am I using the original song. WTF?! Ideas?! Anyone! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. -Blue
It doesn't matter if it just gets marked for monetization. It just means that ad revenue goes to them instead of you. Since you aren't monetizing them, that's a non-issue. It doesn't affect you at all. You only get marked with copyright strikes if you get a video taken down. You're in the clear.
If you don't want anything to happen to your videos, don't use copyrighted music you don't have a license to. And, fair use has very specific criteria, playing the WHOLE SONG because your recording happens to contain the WHOLE ENDING for no reason except that you didn't stop recording when your actual gameplay ended is NOT fair use. Also, fair use is a defense, not a pre-emptive protection. You have to prove fair use to a judge AFTER you get your ass hauled into court, you don't just get to say fair use like it's a magic word that makes copyright lawyers turn to stone like trolls in sunlight.
while your video is not the worst of youtubes content id being bullcrap, i agree that its shit. i remember total biscuit talking about this a while back and how easily its abused.
I've had a few videos, mostly dashcam ones, taken down for copyright infringement. I generally find sending cease and desist letters to YouTube's legal department gets them restored in a business week or so. You're more less agreeing to arbitration with YouTube as the arbitrator if you use their copyright suite. In cases like these, though, you're using work not attributed to you as a product and, judging by your monetization complaint, attempting to make money off of it. That's what the copyright system is established to prevent. If you're not trying to make money off of it, you're fine, identified content won't strike your account unless it's taken down, but be aware of the laws regarding derivative works and such.
Might wanna do what totalbiscuit does and mute the game's music if it uses third party music
A long time ago I uploaded a tutorial with a copyrighted song where I got a notification about. All I really had to do was to add an annotation giving the source of the song, and then get it acknowledged on the copyright strike page. That was 3 year ago though, and that might have changed.

Back then, they muted your video or removed it completely giving you a strike. I think record companies are starting to wise up that they can make monetize these.
You think thats bad. The Content ID system is a mess for the owners as well. Very user unfriendly; kinda like a maze. You can't leave it on automatic, or you end up with unexperienced YouTubers calling you in the middle of the night; asking "Why was my vid taken down", while you have no memory of you authorising it to be taken down. Happened to me a short while back.
I think the Content ID system is great (at least for video creators) I recently used a copyrighted song in my video, but I was able to see what would happen before I used it by searching here: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/ad_supported_music If it shows up in the search, it'll match. Worked as expected, and I get to pay royalties essentially automatically. Fantastic idea. Your video isn't fair use. You might have bought the game but that doesn't give you the rights to the songs in it.
Tell me about it, I've got a tiny nintendo news show I used to run but Nintendo kept hitting me with Third party content notifications because I used footage from their games in the news segment. I mean it should be under fair use since the footage was used for news reporting

His channel has been shut down multiple times despite easily falling within Fair Use

The problem with YouTube’s new system is that it’s apparently flagging huge amounts of previously approved content and imposing no penalties on claimants who are filing bad faith disputes on content they don’t own.
