Windows Media Center is dead.
In a private meeting this week at the Build developers' conference in San Francisco, a Microsoft executive confirmed to me that there will be no update to the company's Media Center software for Windows 10.
The decision is a disappointment to the small but incredibly vocal army of Media Center enthusiasts, who had held out hope that a Windows 10 Media Center add-on, similar to the one offered for Windows 8, might appear at the last minute.
That's not happening. Any PC that is upgraded from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 will lose the Media Center functionality, and there's no way to get it back.
awesome
rip in pepperoni i will not be missing you
What will replace it?
Genericaudioplayer.exe?
I love that they are stripping things down and that is really good, but what if something really shitty replaces it?
i pretty much forgot it was even a thing
I really don't like poorly implimented 'do-it-all' programs

They're removing Media Centre not Media Player

Probably all the Xshit applications that they're trying to push.

They're totally going to replace it with MPC-HC.
I only know what Media Center is because I keep accidentally launching it when I meant the Media Player.
I don't even know if my computer has it installed.
Plex is much better at this.
The player however is a piece of shit that cant stay running for more than 8 hours.

Got a Windows 7 version that isn't Starter or Home Basic (which you seem to do)? You've got Media Center. Got Vista Home Premium or above (excluding Business and Enterprise)? You've got Media Center.
With Windows XP, you had to buy the MCE SKUs to even have it. With 8/8.1, you have to buy the MC pack to get it, regardless of if you're on Pro or not.

I had XPMCE. I actually really liked it at the time for some reason.
Just buy videolan and their team and force everyone to use it.
Kodi / XBMC is much better anyways.
Kodi/Xbmc with with either Plex or Emby as a backend.
The only good thing about windows media center is that you could watch copy-once flagged TV stations if you have a TV tuner.. No other media center has that capability.

I purely used it with my Tuner. The Hauppauge software that came with it was buggy and a bitch to set up, whereas the WMC autodetected everything and pretty much configured itself.

Royale skin, yo. Compared to the XP's ugly default skin, that jawn was Aero-sleek. I had MCE myself during my XP days.
Luna (other XP versions)

I remember downloading Royale Noir for my WinXP, that shit was rad as fuck
I only used MCE when I had a TV antenna usb dongle, it worked really well and recording shows was easy to do but I got bored of it quick because it fucked up on some days (days where I wanted to actually watch TV)
Media Center is one of those things that are great in theory but the implementation sucks.
It was really great software for TV tuners though. Free show listings, decent recording settings, handled 60i content correctly, and could stream TV to an Xbox. As far as that was concerned, it MOSTLY just worked.

Used to be good in the XP days with MCE but past it's time really.

Zune theme is like the perfect dark theme. Loved it.
XP was so gaudy :v:
I love it

The funny thing is for 2001, it was pretty conservative. At least, as conservative as you could get before you hit flat 3D again. Surprising lack of animations.
This sucks, I still haven't found anything capable of viewing live TV with my USB TV Tuner aside from Media Centre.
I know most people don't use it, that's why I'm happy to pay for it for 8. Shame they are ditching it all together though for people that do use it.

ProgDVB won't pick up any channels on my tuner
