According to the SyFy Channel press release, "Helix is an intense thriller about a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control who travel to a high-tech research facility in the Arctic, Arctic Biosystems, to investigate a possible disease outbreak, only to find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle that may hold the key to mankind’s salvation or total annihilation. However, the lethal threat is just the tip of the iceberg, and as the virus evolves, the chilling truth begins to unravel."

So yeah the show premiered last night, it seems really good so far, hopefully SyFy is on to something good. The preview for whats coming this season is also promising, it wont just be about an outbreak.
I look at this, and I think of the black oil from X-Files; I'm also getting some zombie apocalypse vibes here.
Yeah It felt like a SciFi version of Walking Dead, but from what ive read online, and seen for the rest of this season, its definitely going to be something more, besides, with all the people they have behind this show and hype they tried to get out, I think it'll be a bit more than just some outbreak.
Also, I think we can safely assume that the virus was manmade, or at least is a side-effect of some sort of genetic experiment. After all, the tagline is "Play God. Pay the price."

Yeah they were definitely doing some man made stuff, the glowing eyes in the doctor and all. Possibly early augments for humans? Like how Peter jumped 10 feet into the air in that one scene.
