In another indication that Apple is taking privacy concerns - and government scrutiny - seriously, the company is beginning to reject apps that access UDIDs.
While Apple first gave notice of its intention to developers more than six months ago, the company is acting more quickly than expected. Perhaps Apple is self-policing its practices before any external mandate or pressure. Regardless, developers are feeling the impact.
“Everyone’s scrambling to get something into place,” Victor Rubba, chief executive of Fluik, a Canadian developer that makes games like Office Jerk and Plumber Crack, told TechCrunch. “We’re trying to be proactive and we’ve already moved to an alternative scheme.” Rubba said he isn’t sending any updates until he sees how the situation shakes out in the next few days.
The developers most impacted will be ad networks, game networks, app testing systems like TestFlight, and analytics providers.

For those who don't know what UDIDs are;
http://www.innerfence.com/howto/find-iphone-unique-device-identifier-udid
So, how much of Facepunch will be impacted by this? Edit: I am rated dumb for asking a legitimate question, what the fuck... :v:
a significant portion
So I take UDID's allow you to have beta apps?
Afaik these are also used to having saved data for multiplayer games on the iphone without needing an email(Also makes it easier to make sure someone that's banned from your game stays banned)
A step in the right direction.
I don't understand the privacy concerns.
What could someone do if they had your UDID?
This is just better, UDID can be pretty dangerous in the wrong hands and it happened a few times that they were selling UDID's to certain companys
If multiple apps, for example a image sharing app, a app that uses Facebook and a app that could import your contacts to somewhere and they are all connected to the same UDID network they could create a profile with your name/adress and all that jaz

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but surely an email address can do the same? I mean, if they have it, it's a pretty unique identifier, too.
This is yet another fat cat in the continuing cat and mouse game between apple and the jailbreak scene because of how you can use UUIDs to bypass apple's new SHSH protection method.

Yeah a mail could do the same thing. Except you can ignore that by not putting your mail into apps while the UDID does it all behind scenes
Um, couldn't we just have a warning sign on the start of the app that says: "WARNING: This app uses UDID access, to prevent such access proceed to options and disable UDID."
And of course be able to disable UDID as said.

You can't disable it.

The articles in this section rarely have anything to do with Facepunch in particular. They usually concern issues in the UK, US, or other first-world countries, unless dealing with certain events in other areas.
You can't disable it.
You can, however, enable/disable access to it.
Seriously Apple, seriously.
Unfortunately, one of the best uses of this will probably be broken. Testflight makes beta testing apps so much easier and now its probably gonna be disabled. wooo apple
A lot of anti piracy implementation on iOS store offending UDIDs on their server and blacklist them. This will no longer be possible.
Suppose that doesn't matter much though, on a jailbroken iPhone its possible to spoof your UDID.
Good for Apple and it's install-base. No really good. We need more big players in tech to actually do something about consumer's dwindling privacy.
no i fucking didn't

It should use the Apple ID then or something similar, the UDID doesn't (and shouldn't) identify users.
It should use the Apple ID then or something similar, the UDID doesn't (and shouldn't) identify users.
UDID should be used to identify phones, not users - which is exactly what it does. In the end, it won't make too much of a difference if they decide to use the Apple ID instead.
Isn't... isn't this a good thing?
It sounds like if people can't access your UDID they can't fuck up your shit.
They can't do anything they can access your UDID either.

....except beta testing uses UDIDs, not Apple IDs.
Oh no whatever will we do. If only there was some sort of alternate app market free from the tyrannous reign of Apple!
If you have an iDevice just jailbreak it. It's simple and worth it.
If only there was some sort of alternate app market free from the tyrannous reign of Apple!
If only there was a free and open operating system for phones, that you can modify as you like.
Oh wait.
UDID what, Apple?!
....except beta testing uses UDIDs, not Apple IDs.
It shouldn't though, that's my point. If the device changes hands then the ability to run the beta transfers to the new owner, which doesn't make much sense (Unless the new owner is also interested in testing the beta of the app, but for some reason couldn't on their previous device, which seems like a fairly strange situation).
