For 30 years Gregory Jacobs spent his days at Fisherman's Wharf hiding behind branches, often up against a trash can, silently waiting for unsuspecting tourists to come by. When they did, and when they least expected it, he would push those branches towards them, often giving them a little growl. Almost always, without fail, they would jump scream and run. It is one of those iconic San Francisco experiences. Few people can forget a run-in with the bushman. But Jacobs hadn't been in his usual spot lately. He's been in and out the hospital with heart problems. Last Sunday, his family told KTVU, his heart finally gave out and Jacobs passed away. People might not realize he's gone. They might not know because there are actually two bushmen down on the Wharf. David Johnson is known as the one and only bushman. He's been at longer, for 36 years. Johnson and Jacobs did fight over the years for the best spot and claim to the name. But when we caught up with Johnson, he told us that in the last decade the two had become friends. He told us he knew Jacobs had been sick but didn't know he had passed away.
http://m.ktvu.com/news/news/local/fishermans-wharf-tourist-icon-dies-heart-ailment/ndmWy/ Who are these people? Saw this on the news. Street performers are interesting people.
I saw him back in August... It's a sad day for street performers.
Sounds less like a street performer and more like your stereotypical mentally unstable hobo.
Sounds less like a street performer and more like your stereotypical mentally unstable hobo.
Nah, he sounds like it, but he is pretty even keeled and has a good sense of humor. I used to live near San Fran and have seen him quite a few times. This makes me really sad. I remember seeing him as a kid even.
Sad news. Used to watch Bush Man on my lunch breaks every now and then. He was always super gracious when you kicked him down some money.
This guy's a local legend dude what are you talking about.
you can be a wacko who stays hunched over next to a trashcan to try and scare kids from the bushes, and still be a local legend.
That guy was great. He scared me when I was six (my dad set me up). Went back last year after 15 years and found him again and personally gave him some money. It's really sad to think about how time decays the world, but the memories will always live. Goodbye bushman.
