Microsoft's decision to merge these two products is backed by the company's desire to challenge Android, Google's own player in the mobile market that's already experiencing a terrific success. Some new reports concerning the Windows 8 successor have suggested that Microsoft is pondering a September launch for Windows 8.1, even though initial rumors indicated that August was very likely to witness the public debut. Still, June seems to have more chances to bring us the first beta of Blue/Windows 8.1, especially thanks to the BUILD developer conference that'll take place that month in San Francisco. Another interesting piece of information that has emerged this week concerns the preview version of Windows 8.1. As we've told you several times before, Microsoft plans to release just a single testing build of the Windows 8 refresh, thus trying to bring the final product to the market a lot faster. Sources familiar with the matter have reported that this preview is already half-way here, as the company has reached one of the two development stages of the project. Some new leaked screenshots that have surfaced on the web this week have confirmed that a new version dubbed Windows 8.1 Pro Preview is now tested by select developers, which means that Microsoft may be already one step ahead with this beta flavor.

According to some new rumors, Microsoft is also pondering the release of a second Windows 8 upgrade, possibly called Windows 8.2, which could bring a number of improvements to Windows 8.1 and likely to be unveiled in 2014. If this is true, launching Windows 9 during the same year won't make much sense, so Microsoft would basically have no other choice than to delay the next full Windows release. Of course, you shouldn't take this for granted, but don't be too surprised if Microsoft decides to continue the Windows 8 upgrade frenzy next year.
http://news.softpedia.com/news/The-Windows-8-1-Saga-New-Leaked-Version-Launch-Date-in-September-345149.shtml http://news.softpedia.com/news/Microsoft-Might-Delay-Windows-9-as-Windows-8-2-Takes-Shape-345219.shtml So like OSX was original Mac OS10, then it went 10.1, 10.2, 10.3,...,10.8, it seems Windows will be going 8.1, 8.2,...
Watch as a Win 7 vs Win 8 battle arises, guys can you not.
Could be just like service packs, rather than seperate copies.
Nice of them to include the non disclosure notice and build identifier in the screenshot.
Won't get it.
You tried, you failed, scrap it and move on
Someone's getting fiiiiiiired~
You tried, you failed, scrap it and move on
the reviews of 8 have been good, but for the past few years the PC market has been declining due to tablets

By the way, a bit of good news regarding 8.1: http://www.winbeta.org/news/microsoft-possibly-working-letting-user-disable-start-screen Seems there will soon be an option to boot directly to desktop in 8.1
Oh wow. I mean - the WinXp vs Win7 argument was a lost battle, but this is going to get interesting.
Meh, nothing they do will make the Windows desktop as useful as KDE.

Most people who buy computers want their computers to feel like computers.
I don't see why you people are getting so hysterical over an aesthecially pleasing fullscreen grid of icons. Installing Windows 8 hasn't hampered my productivity or turned my gaming PC into a useless toy, or violently murdered my family. All of the "its not optimized for a mouse & keyboard" bullshit is laughable, you would have a point if the start screen completely ignored mouse & keyboard input. Sure I've uninstalled nearly every metro app as they are nearly all useless, but the OS isn't crippled in any way with the changes they made.
How the devil is metro aesthetically pleasing in any way?

[editline]14th April 2013[/editline]
How the devil is metro aesthetically pleasing in any way?
It looked nice on my Kin 2M. Then it shattered in my side pocket.
How the devil is metro aesthetically pleasing in any way?
For one thing it isn't gaudy like Aero, it has nice clean edges and its tidy. The old win7 start menu was gummy and bubbly and had a profile picture haphazardly sticking out of the top.
How the devil is metro aesthetically pleasing in any way?
Only on tablets and all-in-one desktops with touchscreens. Otherwise, it isn't.
No, I don't like change!
How the devil is metro aesthetically pleasing in any way?
I don't know, how do you answer that? It just looks nice and clean I guess? I prefer it over Windows 7's theme, that's for sure. [editline]15th April 2013[/editline]
Only on tablets and all-in-one desktops with touchscreens. [editline]15th April 2013[/editline] Oh but it fits my gaming desktop very well.
I always skinned the living shit out of windows 7 to remove the profile pic from the start menu, get rid of the gloss and square the edges off to stop them looking so silly.
The only thing I don't like about metro is that it's fullscreen.
The only thing I don't like about metro is that it's fullscreen.
You can fix that, there is even a program that will open metro apps up inside regular windows if you really must use them.
By the way, a bit of good news regarding 8.1: http://www.winbeta.org/news/microsoft-possibly-working-letting-user-disable-start-screen Seems there will soon be an option to boot directly to desktop in 8.1
who the fuck does that even bother i mean you literally have to press one button to get to the desktop
who the fuck does that even bother i mean you literally have to press one button to get to the desktop
Some people don't like it when they have options taken away from them for no good reason.
The only thing I don't like about metro is that it's fullscreen.
I don't really see why you would be using any metro app except for the start screen and the settings menu. I mean, those metro apps you find in the store are things you'd use if you had a tablet or something. The start screen itself is something I really love by the way. It's faster, and looks nicer.
who the fuck does that even bother i mean you literally have to press one button to get to the desktop
Well apparently enough people complained. It's odd though, people go to the desktop to open a program say Chrome. When you can just do the same on the start screen as it's just a program launcher. Just like the taskbar or old start menu. So it doesn't take any more effort. [editline]14th April 2013[/editline]
Some people don't like it when they have options taken away from them for no good reason.
What option was taken away? People use the desktop to just open programs like always, and you can do the same from the start screen.
Some people don't like it when they have options taken away from them for no good reason.
You are only going to open the start screen up anyway to launch a program, you had might as well be there to begin with.
