This is my current build, the C2D is getting really old now and it needs to be changed. I've got a budget of around £200. I was thinking of a Phenom II X4 955 that I can overclock, but I'm terrible with AMD components so I'm not sure what chipset board I should be getting to go with it. I was also thinking of buying a second hand 5770 to run in crossfire with the one I currently have, is this worth it? After Christmas people will be selling off their old hardware and I'm sure I'll find one for £40-£50 (not part of the original £200 budget). Lastly, I'm wondering how much RAM I should buy. Should I get an 8GB kit of 1600Mhz DDR3 or just stick with 4GB's? Memory seems to be incredibly cheap these days and I'm just trying to figure out what's in my best interests.
buying a phenom would be spending $200 and upgrading your computer to be slightly less obsolete. save up and get an i5 because if you spend money on a phenom you are going to regret it
won't the i5 be bottlenecked to hell by the 5770 though?
I'd think your C2D is bottlenecking as is. You'd still notice a great framerate improvement and futureproof yourself for some time with an i5.
the 5770 isn't a bad card. yeah it's out of date but it was the standard 'gaming pc card' of the last ati generation and it's not like this generation is that massive of an improvement or games are getting much harder to run
The i3 2100 outperforms the phenom 980, so 1155 is still a better choice, and is very well doable with both a p67 or z68 motherboard. So would this be good to go for? And would it be a good idea to purchase another 5770 if my budget allows it or would a small SSD in the same price range be better? [editline]20th November 2011[/editline] that costs £265.48 currently but it'll probably come down by around £50-£40 around/after Christmas right?
