• Fan problem.. or?

Before I begin I'd like to say that I have a HP Pavilion dv6000 It all started about 2 months ago. I was lying in my bed one night watching movies on my laptop when suddenly the fan started giving out a very loud noise. It sounded like someone was drilling inside my laptop. I was worried of course, quickly turned off my computer and cleaned it wíth compressed air. I tried starting it again but the same thing happened - The fan was noisy as hell. I didn't care anymore and just continued watching my movie, turning up the volume a bit. After a couple of hours the sound suddenly stopped. You didn't hear the loud-as-hell noise anymore. In fact, you didn't hear anything. The fan had stopped working completely and after only a couple of minutes the computer shut down. Every time you started the laptop the fan wouldn't work and it would shut down after 3-5 minutes. All you could hear from the fan were very low squeaking sounds. I thought "Damnit, the fan is dead. I guess I'll have to get a new one." A month later the fan I had ordered finally arrived. Happy as I was I immediately started disassembling the lappy. It took me 6 hours but I finally got to the fan. I exchanged it with my new fan and put all of it back together. I started up the computer, a little scared taking cover in case it decided to explode or something. To my relief I saw the bootscreen and relaxed. But that wasn't the end of the good news. I could hear the fan working! I almost started crying out of happiness. Mantears, mind you. But then, suddenly, the screen went black. The computer had shut down again. I started it up again and could hear the fan working so I thought it might've just been a one case event. But then I noticed that the squeaking sounds from the computer were still there. And after only a couple of minutes the computer shut down again, just like when my fan was broken. I tried starting it up a couple of times but got the same result every time. Now I sit here and have no idea of what the problem might be. Help!
You may have accidentally unseated the heatsink while installing the new fan (or did it on purpose and didn't reseat it properly). In order for heat to transfer to the heatsink, and be expelled from the heatsink by the fan, the heatsink MUST have firm contact with the cpu. Also, its recommended to apply a fresh layer of thermal paste at the least once a year to keep optimum heat transfer. I know it sucks, but I recommend opening up the laptop again, removing the heatsink from the CPU, cleaning the old thermal paste off, and applying a fresh layer (a grain of rice amount of thermal paste, very little is needed, more can actually hinder heat transfer), the carefully reseat the heatsink and assure that is completely in place. As for the squeaking sounds, I have no idea, unless your luck was bad enough that you also got a DOA fan.
You might be right. I'll disassemble it again and apply thermal paste. It would make sense considering I have never changed the thermal paste, not even when I took in my new fan, and I've had the laptop for 2 years.
yeah
