Zemir Begic, 32, with wife, Arijana
ST. LOUIS • A 17-year-old St. Louis man has been charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the bludgeoning death of a Bosnian immigrant.
Police say Robert Mitchell along with two other teens, both juveniles, attacked the 32-year-old man with hammers early Sunday. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. Mitchell and one of the juveniles are black and the other teen is Hispanic, according to police.
A police spokeswoman said investigators do not believe race played a role in the bludgeoning death of a Bosnian immigrant early Sunday, but declined to say what authorities believe is the motive in the killing.
Many at the scene of the murder near Gravois Avenue and Itaska Street speculated that the four men who beat Zemir Begic, 32, to death with hammers targeted him because of his Bosnian descent.
But detectives do not believe Begic's Bosnian heritage or the color of his skin served as a motive in any way, police spokeswoman Schron Jackson said.
Witnesses told police that the victim and the suspect exchanged some words as Begic was walking past them on the way to his car, Jackson said.
Someone then hit Begic's car with something or kicked it, and Begic stopped his car, got out and exchanged words with the suspects once more. That's when he was attacked, Jackson said.
"We think it was wrong place, wrong time," Jackson said.
Homicide detectives do not believe the suspects took anything from the victim during the attack.
Jackson said Chief Sam Dotson noted that none of the suspects appear to have anything in their criminal backgrounds to suggest they would do something of this magnitude.
Dotson said more than one hammer was used in the killing, but he would not say how many.
Police arrested two suspects, ages 15 and 16 Sunday. Mitchell turned himself in to police Sunday night. Detectives believe they know who the fourth suspect is, but have not yet made an arrest, Jackson said.
Kindest regards to his family this is probably going to be very tough for them.
a 17 year old killed an immigrant? Wow that sucks. It's tough to be an immigrant. Lots of respect to friends and family
I love how it's never racially motivated unless white person attacks black person. What the hell were bunch of 15 year olds doing with sledgehammers outside after midnight anyway then?

there isn't exactly rampant anti-Bosnian sentiment in the U.S.
hell there isn't exactly a lot of Bosnians

nvm I stand corrected

guess it's different in St. Louis

Maybe it's because the police have already determined that it wasn't a racially-motivated crime?

The police determining it wasn't racially motivated, or even a crime doesn't seem to stop people when it's white on black.

Why would anyone want to migrate to St. Louis?

St. Louis wasn't always a shithole. Of course, migration there now isn't appealing. But that wasn't always the case. It took time for that population of Bosnians to develop, and that probably occurred over several decades during the 20th century. I could be wrong but that seems most likely.

I guess so. I wasn't thinking that far behind.
Still, I've been to St. Louis and I left just a day before mike brown got shot. The place is a dilapidated, apocalyptic wasteland-looking shithole where people go to die.

Well you are negative. Its not all bad (especially Fitz's, damn good rootbeer floats)!
These guys were walking around with fucking hammers late at night. They were looking for trouble.

Why are you using this random act of violence to accuse the black community of crying wolf on racism? At what point does that agenda come into play, here?

Well of course it looks like that, especially if it's so populated by Bosnian people! :v:
On a more serious note, though, it'd be better if the authorities regard this as a hate crime. I wouldn't be surprised if the Bosnian immigrants are treated with an additional layer of prejudice by the rest of the population, especially if we're talking Bosnian Muslims and not just people from the country of Bosnia and Herzegovina in general.

Not far from the truth. Saint Louis City is an economic wasteland. It used to be an industrial city, but with the collapse of industry, and the migration of whites outside city limits to escape the increasing populations of minorities, we never really recovered. The city center has only a mile or so of actual, living city, surrounding the Arch grounds. And even that isn't doing so hot. Everything else is no-man's-land; the bones of the old city. Once prosperous neighborhoods that feel into deep poverty and disrepair, and hundreds of abandoned, vandalized factories, warehouses, and businesses. These are places you don't want to travel.
What's worse is that, due to a deep misunderstanding of the socioeconomic history of this city and a lot of old die-hard racism, the Average Joe thinks that things are the way are because of "the blacks." There is a strong, if usually unspoken, belief that the black demographic, which dominates the statistics for those living in that urban nightmare, dragged Saint Louis down with crime and drugs and gangs, and not that this crime arose because of the conditions they had been segregated into. This misunderstanding leads to a lot of finger-pointing and racial tensions, but little actual progress towards fixing the city itself. So, Saint Louis is likely to remain in the state it's currently in for quite some time.
