Sony has signalled what could be the final end of the venerable floppy disk.
The electronics giant has said it will stop selling the 30-year-old storage media in Japan from March 2011.
Earlier this year Sony stopped selling the disks in most international markets due to dwindling demand and competition from other storage formats.
The slow death of the "floppy" or "diskette" began in 1998 when Apple decided to not include a floppy drive in its G3 iMac computer.
Since then various other firms have stopped support for floppy disks, including computer giant Dell in 2003.
Computing store PC World stopped selling them in 2007.
However, Sony has continued to sell the disks, and continues to ship them in the millions.
Now, the firm - which claims to have produced the first 3.5in (9cm) disks in 1981 - has decided to halt sales completely faced with competition from online storage and portable USB drives.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8643844.stm
Nothing to mourn about really.
Shit man, how will I play my vidya games now?
Oh... No?
Honestly, I don't think it'll be missed so much...
Sony to stop selling floppy di...
Was what I saw as the title since Chrome is in a small window currently.
When I first read the title I thought it meant they were selling floppy disks from the future.
Good night, sweet prince.
I haven't even had a floppy disk drive for about 5 years.
Something I never really needen anymore, like most people.
To be honest, the last conceivable use they had, flashing BIOS chips, has now been phased out by flash drives. I haven't even used a floppy disk since way before '05.
I want a floppy disk from 2011.
Wait... they still sold those?
:froggonk:
brb buying them for the last time

I didn't think they were still sold either. I thought they died out by 2005. Who still buys floppy disks?
Buy them now.
Sell them in 70 years.
I haven't even had a floppy drive in my PC for years now.
I saw this a few hours ago and thought "Sony still sells computers with FDD?"

Those were the days. not 1.4MB, 756kb floppies.
Monkey Island II 22 DISKS MOTHER FUCKER.
Lead to one of the greatest adventure game memes ever. "I can just squeeze through this gap! it! It leads to a complex series of catacombs! I thi.. PLEASE INSERT DISK 23"
lol
My old computer had a slot for floppy disks but no floppy drive.
So you could feed my old computer on floppies.
I still have Tetris on a floppy disk somewhere.
Noo! How am I going to install Windows 3?????
What will use drive letters A and B now
Awww, I guess those Public Service Announcements about floppy piracy are more moot than ever now.
I still use these occasionally just to listen to my MIDI music collection

I saw 2011 and thought to myself Holy Shit, that's in 10 years. Then remembered it's not 2001.
I salvaged an old floppy drive for just this occasion.

I gave you a clock to keep time with.
I actually have an old floppy drive sitting in a hard drive holder thing in my case. I also have a small fortune of these drives.

I think you might need to get a calendar or something.
