Al Sharpton, in 1988.

It was 1987 when a black teenager, Tawana Brawley, said she had been raped and kidnapped by a group of white men in Dutchess County, N.Y. Her story of being attacked, scrawled with racial slurs, smeared with feces and left beside a road wrapped in a plastic bag made front pages across the nation — especially after the Rev. Al Sharpton took up her case.
"a special state grand jury later determined that Brawley had fabricated her claims, perhaps to avoid punishment for staying out late."
What kind of story is that to get out of a punishment for staying out late? Just say you had no money for a taxi or something holy fuck
That's horrible. But that man in the background... hilarious. Oh shit didn't realize that was Sharpton. Nice.
What kind of story is that to get out of a punishment for staying out late? Granted, she went a bit over the top.
That's horrible. But that man in the background... hilarious. Oh shit didn't realize that was Sharpton. Nice.
I didn't know that a man like him could look so glorious with long hair, but lo and behold.
Damn Al Sharpton's lookin' groovy. I'm imagining that press conference being set to a funky bass-line.
Her mother frequently beat her and her stepfather murdered his ex-wife. I'd be slightly scared of mad parents, too. Granted, she went a bit over the top.
"A bit over the top" doesn't even begin to scrape the surface.
"A bit over the top" doesn't even begin to scrape the surface.
Understatement for comedic effect.
Her mother frequently beat her and her stepfather murdered his ex-wife. I'd be slightly scared of mad parents, too. Granted, she went a bit over the top.
What? If my mother was kicking my ass every day and my stepfather was a MURDERER I'd be more than "slightly scared" of my parents. I'd be making up ANY story I could think of to avoid them if I could.
idk I think I'd probably just not go home
idk I think I'd probably just not go home
Good plan. You're 15 years old (Tawana was at the time). Where are you going to go? How are you going to eat and otherwise support yourself?
Good plan. You're 15 years old (Tawana was at the time). Where are you going to go?
Good plan. You're 15 years old (Tawana was at the time). Where are you going to go? How are you going to eat and otherwise support yourself?
Plus if you run away the cops tend to not believe you if you say your parents are abusive and take you back there
Plus if you run away the cops tend to not believe you if you say your parents are abusive and take you back there
don't keep identification and make up an alias then I guess
don't keep identification and make up an alias then I guess
Isn't the whole point of this thread about how she's a bad person for breaking the law to avoid upsetting her parents? Well that would be breaking the law to avoid upsetting her parents
Isn't the whole point of this thread about how she's a bad person for breaking the law to avoid upsetting her parents? Well that would be breaking the law to avoid upsetting her parents
Slight difference in crimes, no?
Isn't the whole point of this thread about how she's a bad person for breaking the law to avoid upsetting her parents? Well that would be breaking the law to avoid upsetting her parents
no?
Isn't the whole point of this thread about how she's a bad person for breaking the law to avoid upsetting her parents? Well that would be breaking the law to avoid upsetting her parents
But not in a way that fucks over an innocent man. Victimless crime.
But not in a way that fucks over an innocent man. Victimless crime.
True, and I'm hardly condoning what she did, but the fact remains is that she basically had to do something illegal to protect herself and that's not very fair
But not in a way that fucks over an innocent man. Victimless crime.
*Six, *men Just, y'know. For measure. Also, ladies, a tip for fake rape claims: Don't pretend to be gangraped. The more people you involve, the more solid alibis you'll be up against.
A situation can have multiple victims and multiple wrongdoers, and one person can even be both (meant that to merge but oh well)
True, and I'm hardly condoning what she did, but the fact remains is that she basically had to do something illegal to protect herself and that's not very fair
She ran away from home without permission. To visit her boyfriend. Who was in prison.
But not in a way that fucks over an innocent man. Victimless crime.
No one was fucked over. Her allegations were disproved rather quickly.
No one was fucked over. Her allegations were disproved rather quickly.
The stigma of rape allegations at the time probably had a mild fucking-over effect.
To sum it up: Kid's parents were shit, would beat her ass. However, she was a fuckwit, skipped school to visit her boyfriend who was in prison, then stayed away for four days, smeared herself in poop and racial insults, wrapped herself in a plastic bag, then pretended to be unconcious for a while, before blaming six guys for raping her. No evidence supporting her case was found.

WHY would a 15 year old skip school? Have a boyfriend in prison? Run away and go to such drastic lengths to avoid going home? These are all signs of a desperate kid trying to avoid an abusive household. Was it wrong of her to do it? Sure. But to call her a fuckwit is simply ignorant and insulting.
The stigma of rape allegations at the time probably had a mild fucking-over effect.
yeah there's pretty much no situation where falsely accusing someone of a crime is ok understandable maybe, but not condonable or ok
I'd take living in a box and eating discarded food over getting beaten and living with a murderer personally [editline]5th August 2013[/editline] not to mention there are soup kitchens all over the country and every truck stop has a shower
yeah those fucking homeless teenagers have it easy
yeah those fucking homeless teenagers have it easy
What he said was stupid, but this is even worse. He never said that, nor did he hint at it. Please stop implying things that nobody thinks just to feel morally superior.
