Mind giving a breakdown of what happened with their whole "Civil War" thing?
I'm not surprised at all, Maker has been getting super shady. What happened after the Civil War? Regardless i wish him the best.
Regardless of this, I'm certain he's still on the Podcast. After all, Co-Optional is TB's brand, not Maker's. But I still wish him good luck going "indie".
Hope it goes well for him, I really enjoy his content.
For those who want to know what happened in the Civil War, here's a thread about it. Needless to say, it doesn't sound good.

But secondly, and probably more importantly, Maker has been going through people's videos and making them private out of fear of being sued for musical copyright infringement, according to TB Jesse has had near hundreds of his videos taken down because of this. He also implies that Jesse and Cry may leave the network as a result.
It's not just the Civil War promo itself, for months Polaris have been going through their channels' videos and randomly forcing them to private because their algorithm detected a possibility of copyright infringement. IE making episode #20 of a Let's Play from 3 years ago private because the algorithm detected a song that came out 4 months ago. Jesse has been the most vocal about how much it's been fucking with him.
Main problem here is that they're using machine algorithms rather than actually paying someone to go through and check everything. We are NOT at the point where a machine can do a better job than a human in that regard. Yes, it can do the job quicker, but it is sloppier and less considerate than a human. Especially a human who knows that Cry has the permission to use the music he plays. It's a gripe I have with trying to automate a process but using something that is actively WORSE than manual labour. If you don't do the job properly the first time, you should have to do it again later and do it properly. If someone asks for beef stroganoff and you accidentally thaw out a serving of beef bourguignon, especially when there are still servings of beef stroganoff on site, you don't just serve them the bourguignon. You thaw out the goddamn stroganoff, make sure it's the right temperature, and serve it to them with a few slices of bread and some tiny butter portions.

He had to help a fan compile all of the privatized videos to be hosted on new channel so people can still watch his old series. He's been incredibly vocal about it in streams and even ground his channel to a halt for quite a while to wait for things to be sorted out. Listening to him when it was going down was just depressing you could tell how much it was stressing him out. I wouldn't be surprised if he leaves soon enough as well, if he's able to financially. I really hope this works for Jesse, I've been watching him for many many years and love his stuff. Must be terrifying to go without a network after all this time, especially when Youtube's been acting shittier than usual and now the responsibility for it falls to him alone.
Does Polaris not have strict contracts? I'm surprised that he was able to just bail
Does Polaris not have strict contracts? I'm surprised that he was able to just bail
He was probably planning this for a while, but I have to wonder how long given how recent some of the more egregious problems are. Or maybe his contract was close to expiring anyways and he just didn't renew. That said they're likely a lot more lenient than you may assume. Youtube networks are more forgiving than the days of early Machinima who locked you in perpetuity and refused to honor protections you wrote into the contract when you tried to leave while taking over 50% of your ad revenue and giving you the rest as long as it was made in North America only.
I don't watch Jesse Cox on his own but I love him on Co-Optional. Hope it all works out for him.
I don't watch Jesse Cox on his own but I love him on Co-Optional. Hope it all works out for him.
Jesse is a bit too energetic by himself, but is a perfect comic relief character when put besides TB.
