Thats kind of cool.
I want to make a custom emulation box that looks like a SNES.
I'd rather not tear apart a real SNES though.

If you're lucky enough to live by a library or something with a 3D printer you could model and print out a little SNES box

I printed my own bootleg NES Mini case for a Raspberry Pi 3 that came out pretty darn well :v:
I think I've posted it before. If I redid it, it would come out a lot better since I have a much higher quality printer now.
I've already added a few games to mine.

What printer would you recommend at a hobbyist level?

just use shapeways for occasional printing, since you can pick some high grade materials per project instead of committing to one format for a long investment. Someone even made a raspberry pi case but at 50 bucks and this 'quality' you may as well just find the actual snes classic to mod

If you only want to print one thing ever then sure. But Shapeways is like $20 minimum even for a really small print - if you want to print ten things you've already spent almost as much as a decent entry-level printer.
Not to mention what 3D printers are useful for is fast and cheap prototyping. That doesn't exactly work when you have to spend $20+ and wait a week for shipping for every prototype you want printed.

The WanHao Duplicator i3 Plus is a pretty superb printer in the sub-$500 category. It's available in the US as the Monoprice Maker Select Plus. It's essentially a high quality, factory calibrated Prusa i3.
That's the printer I'm currently using. The printer I was using before was a Chinese Prusa i3 kit that I assembled myself. It worked, but it was shit. The Monoprice one is so much better - you pretty much hit print and it just werks.
If you want to get into it super casually and cheaply, I've heard the Monoprice Maker Select Mini v2 is pretty good. I think it's easy to outgrow the size of the build plate on that one even at a hobbyist level, though.

Neat, I didn't know libraries have 3D printers. Shame the closest one is an hour away from me.

some areas will have maker spaces with 3d printers and other equipment for making stuff.
It's a crime that this thing was missing Chrono Trigger and Tetris&DrMario, so those are the only two games I've added. It's perfect now
Is this will be against the law
