EDMONTON — Around midnight Thursday, five G4S employees drove to HUB Mall on the University of Alberta campus to deliver cash. Now three are dead, one is critically wounded, and one is wanted by police. He also fired at Matthew Schuman, a 4th employee who is now in critical condition. The suspect fled the scene with a large amount of cash, which initiated a international manhunt. He was then caught at a border crossing in BC, Canada trying to get into the US. This story blows my mind for a number of reasons. I don't understand why someone would do this and think they can get away with it. And these poor employees are prepared for robberies that happen on very rare occasions, but there is no way they could have prepared for one of their own co workers robbing the. I also don't understand how he managed to pass a background check especially with this picture of him posted on the internet: any thoughts?
I bet he thinks he's some kind of criminal mastermind or king shit of the underworld or something.
You live in Alberta. You work on the rigs you make more money there than you would find in that truck.
Personally, I don't have any strong convictions about him robbing the armored car, but the fact that he unnecessarily killed four of his coworkers and nearly killed another makes him a 100% asshole. Seriously, he could have stolen the money without any injuries. Armored cars are designed to keep the inside safe, so he could just lock them out where they would be harmless.
Sounds just like the plot for Office Space.

They are guards to prevent the money being stolen no matter who it is... They wouldn't just let him pick up the money and then say, "Okay, well have a good day!"
saw this on the news a while ago my condolences go to the familys
In Ireland the army have an armed escort for cash deliveries, it's a pretty boring job standing still for 15 minutes while the 2 lads in the van do the rounds, they have orders to shoot on sight anyone who tries to confront the man with the "Case" that carries the sum, it's generally a 5 figure number. I'm surprised there is no police or army escort for bank jobs in the states it's an easy target for armed robbers.

When they do an ATM pick-up/delivery they have one person empty/load the ATM, another employee guards him, The driver of the truck stays in the truck, and there is another guard in the back of the truck who stays in the truck while the other two get the cash. I'm wondering why all 5 employees left the G4S truck.
In America we generally have two different means A) Big black guy with a gun, with driver B) Big white guy with a gun, with driver I'm not just talking "big" im talking fucking ripped. Guy who does the deposits and drop offs for us is like 6' 4" with a 6 pack literally has 88mm flak cannons for arms. the bullet proof vest he wears is ready to rip

My guess he was quick to his gun. Hope he gets life. what scum.
I guess the job's paycheck wouldn't have been enough? I always assumed these guys get a rather nice paycheck compared to most people.
G4S carry Glocks on their hip. When I first heard of this, I wondered how the hell 4 armed guards all got shot without any of them fighting back at all, when I heard it was another employee I figured that would have to have been the only way.

The armored car companies hire their own armed guards. From the ones I've spoken to, pay isn't that great. Around $15/hr to be the only line of defense against an armed robber. And you have to provide your own gun.

I've seen armoured cash drop off's at ATM's and banks around Australia. The vehicle is can withstand a bomb I've heard. Nobody goes near them, I don't think they shoot at people but I think it is somehow harder to comprimise the drop offs. I don't know, I've only seen them rarely.
They carry Shotguns in their cabins in my state.
Hearing about this is depressing and worrisome for me... I hate knowing that people like that can exist in my city or province, or even in this world. (I live in Edmonton.)

Who honestly expects someone to walk up and shoot you dead in the middle of a normal working day?
Being capable of downing 4 men without them getting a hit on you makes you an incredibly dangerous motherfucker.
I can confirm this, its stupid how we Ireland a nutral country can protect armored vechicals better well then...the us.
Well the whole reason we do it is because a organisation historically robs them for a source of income. And they ain't your standard robbers haha. The security on the van's is tight as hell, there is also a helicopter deployed along with the 2 Jeeps worth of guys.
Being capable of downing 4 men without them getting a hit on you makes you an incredibly dangerous motherfucker.
Totally bro, he shot four people who knew and trusted him when their backs were turned. He's truly a badass criminal mastermind of unmatched magnitude.
Unnecessary murder of people who trust you. That's just incredibly low.
Killing your coworkers who trusted you, stealing cash with a huge chance of getting caught, is this really worth it? If he doesn't get life, I don't know what kind of horrendous crime you have to commit to get it.
in the uk our armoured vehicle employees have ballistic helmets but other than that they're completely unarmed, have no escort, and are often middle-aged short guys with beer bellies
in the uk our armoured vehicle employees have ballistic helmets but other than that they're completely unarmed, have no escort, and are often middle-aged short guys with beer bellies
Dont they have pepper spray or a batton?

I don't know though, that is just my guess... I am not discrediting the people who were working on this truck. The guy clearly had the advantage of his employees not expecting another employee to shoot them.
Dont they have pepper spray or a batton?
Nope. The van that picks money up from work just has one guy as the driver and collector as well. But you never really hear about them being robbed.
