People say i can get a PS3 or Xbox 360 controller, but there has got to be a better one out there
There really isn't, pick one.
EDIT:
Most pc controllers are knockoff ps3/xbox controllers anyway.
PS3 and 360 is where it's at honestly, gamepads haven't advanced a whole lot.
360 if you plan to play shooters and want easy native support, Ps3 for racing/platformers however you'll need a driver/program called (Motioninjoy) which tricks the computer into thinking your Ps3 controller is a 360 one.
The most important choice is comfort really, whichever fits best in your hands.
I like the Xbox 360 controller because it works out of the box in most new games. It's pretty comfortable too.
The Logitech gamepads work (And are) pretty much the same as Xbox Controllers but are also easier to hold and use, atleast they are in my experiences.
360 controller fits perfectly into my hands, has the indented analog sticks that I really like and is natively supported by more and more games these days
The 360 controller works with just about everything that that came out on Xbox, plus some that don't (all games for windows branded games for instance).
I've got a Logitech rumblepad that can switch between Xinput and DirectInput. Good pad.
I'd go with the 360 controller, you can get a wired or wireless one, well supported now and of good build quality

This one has the advantage of being wired.
I grew up playing the PS1 so I still personally can't stand the layout of a 360 controller but you really can't go wrong with either or. I can't justify buying a PS3 controller when both the Logitech and 360 are both cheaper than the PS3 controller. Maybe the Sixaxis could be used for things though, I don't know.
Whatever controller you choose, though, it can be made compatible with any game you could think of using Xpadder or JoyToKey so don't worry when people say that 360 controllers are more compatible. both of those programs convert Analogue movement into Mouse movement perfectly. (Though, I realized just now while typing this up that driving games may have an issue with the Logitech if the game doesn't directly support it.)

Shit, I didn't realize that the new Logitech pads supported that.
Just another reason to pick up the Logitech I linked to. Logitech always makes great shit.
But why would you get it over it over a 360/Ps3? Then you'd have native support aswell as the logitech "features".

That's the exact one I have :D.
I was dumb enough to buy the f710, wireless version. The wireless range is so bad it completely negates having it besides possibly the convenience of not having another cable lying around.
as long as a gamepad supports xinput you're good to go

Cheaper and I've always had an excellent history buying from Logitech. I have not owned a single one of their products that has not been rock-solid and an excellent performer.
And I just use my Rumblepad 2 without drivers. I never care about vibration so I should have saved the money and gotten the normal one.

well if it's xinput it'll work on the 360, too, anyways.
I have a 360 controller specifically for my pc. Works like a charm and it is the easiest and probably the best option out there.
If you don't want a PS3/XBOX one, get a Logitech Gamepad.
Overall quality is good!
Like I said, I have the F510 and it's basically a wired controller with the old DirectInput so you can use it as you like as well as Xinput for games like Need for Speed. My only gripe is the vibration is super powerful and the triggers are a little stiff and not ergonomic, but it's otherwise really nice. You may not like the flipped d-pad and thumbstick though.

You can change vibration strength in the driver options. (I just installed them to try it out.) Open the driver, select device, game controllers, then properties.
I have an Xbox 360 controller that works well with a wireless adapter. It's functional, cheap, and comfortable.

they are built like tanks too
The 360 controller would be perfect if the D-Pad wasn't so horrible.

The only thing I hate about the 360 controler is the giant durrrrr battery pack, and since the PC USB version doesn't have it, I love it!
I agree on Xbox 360 controller. I never really saw the purpose in getting one, but someone insisted I should get a controller (I was streaming Prince of Persia SoT).
When I eventually got one, I loved it.
- Wireless range is good, I haven't had any problems with that whatsoever
- Get the Play&Charge kit if you've got the money; then you don't have to fuck around with batteries. Battery life is pretty good as far as I can tell.
And of course as others have said, a lot of games support the Xbox controller out of the box.
Only 'downside' is that with the Play&Charge kit, is that you still need to have the wireless receiver plugged in.
