From BBC News
Sacha Baron Cohen was escorted off the Oscars red carpet after a publicity stunt for his new film, The Dictator. The British comedian arrived in character as a middle eastern leader and claimed to be carrying the ashes of former North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il. In an interview with US TV host Ryan Seacrest, he said it was Kim's dying wish "to be sprinkled over the red carpet and over Halle Berry's chest." He then tipped the urn over the host, covering his tuxedo in white dust. Baron Cohen, who is known for outrageous publicity stunts in films like Borat and Bruno, was bundled off the red carpet by security guards. Turning to the camera, Seacrest said: "Anything can happen and it most certainly did, all over my lapel.'' Baron Cohen's film is expected to be released in March. He was invited to the Oscars as a cast member of Martin Scorsese's multiple award nominee Hugo. In response, the comedian posted a statement to General Aladeen's Twitter account. "VICTORY IS OURS! Today the Mighty Nation of Wadiya triumphed over the Zionist snakes of Hollywood. "Evil and all those who made Satan their protector were vanquished and driven into the Pacific Sea. What I am trying to say here is that the Academy have surrendered and sent over two tickets and a parking pass! TODAY OSCAR, TOMORROW OBAMA!" After the red carpet stunt, Moneyball actor Jonah Hill, who is up for best supporting actor, said: "I guess the Oscars isn't the best place to sell your movie. I think he's a funny guy, though." "Ryan's mouth dropped open on live TV," laughed Jackie Collins. "But that's what makes live TV good. British comedy actor Sacha Baron Cohen turned up on the red carpet dressed in a white military uniform "I don't think Ryan was very pleased, but I don't think I'd be very pleased." Piers Morgan commented it was "just another day in Hollywood". 30 Rock actress Tina Fey saw the funny side, and crossed herself over the ashes as she walked past. Speaking to BBC 5 live, US chat show host Jay Leno said, "only in Hollywood does that dictator override Libya" as a major news story. "And somehow that's more shocking. "It's certainly worse than anything Gadaffi or Assad could possibly have done." Comedian Steve Martin said: "I love Sacha Baron Cohen", and joked that the red carpet shouldn't be sacred ground. "It should be 12% respect, 23% levity and 13% joy," he said. It is not the first time Baron Cohen has used industry events to promote his movies. Comedian Fey seemed to appreciate the joke In 2006, the actor arrived at the Toronto International Film Festival dressed as Borat, the main character from the hit comedy. Three years later he went to the MTV Video Music Awards as flamboyant fashion critic Bruno, to promote his movie of the same name. During the show he was launched into the air wearing a harness and landed in the lap of US rap star Eminem, who stormed out - although it was later reported that the musician had been in on the joke.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-17175112 [editline]27th February 2012[/editline] Oh god what have I done, can someone change the thread title to just "Sacha Baron Cohen pulls Oscar stunt for The Dictator"? Thanks.
I liked the long title, it was inviting. Well that was interesting time to see what this movie is.
"It's certainly worse than anything Gadaffi or Assad could possibly have done."
Pouring fake ashes onto a carpet is worse than gathering people up and murdering them?
Should've done it to Ashton Kutcher.
Anyone else upset Hugo took home so many damn nominations?
Awesome. Looking forward to the movie. I'm just hoping they didn't put all the good parts in the trailer, making the remainder of the movie bad (Darkest Hour anyone?). Thread title:
Well that's just plain silly.
Ryan Seacrest had it coming seriously
Pouring fake ashes onto a carpet is worse than gathering people up and murdering them?
what? of course it isnt! Why would you even need to ask that question, it's pretty fucking obvious that massacring people by the scores is way- oh sorry, didn't catch your joke, i'm pretty bad at identifying sarcasm
VOTE EL PRESIDENTE [t]http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/58734000/jpg/_58734923_014099374-1.jpg[/t] OR ELSE

don't mind him, he's just being brilliant
The resemblance is uncanny.
Kind of a dick move but I envy his massive balls.
The Kim Jong Urn was a good touch.
Hollywood takes itself way too seriously.
Why are they surprised. It's Sacha Baron Cohen. If he is in any sort of character, be ready to have weird shit happen to you or someone near you.
I love this man, making life a little bit weirder every time he shows up.
Personally I can't wait to see his new movie!
This film was in production before the Arab Spring. Cohen probably couldn't believe his luck when it happened.
fucking genius
it was Kim's dying wish "to be sprinkled over the red carpet and over Halle Berry's chest."
Welp, knowing Kim it's plausible. It'd certainly not be the most insane thing he's said. :v:
Classy. I hope he does another Ali G movie next
Pouring fake ashes onto a carpet is worse than gathering people up and murdering them?
Must have been said by someone who has no idea what they do for a living.
Oh this guy, hadn't seen him since that godawful "Bruno" movie Looking forward to whatever this character does, though.
he was probably the coolest cat at the awards show.
Oh this guy, hadn't seen him since that godawful "Bruno" movie
He played the inspector in Hugo cabre.
