Oculus Rift - the first truly immersive virtual reality headset for video games.
I thought I'd make one of these since both the Oculus Rift and virtual reality are subjects that really interest me, I've waited for someone else to start one of these threads but they haven't so I'll do the honors.
Step inside your favorite game.
Oculus Rift is a new virtual reality (VR) headset designed specifically for video games that will change the way you think about gaming forever. With an incredibly wide field of view, high resolution display, and ultra-low latency head tracking, the Rift provides a truly immersive experience that allows you to step inside your favorite game and explore new worlds like never before.
We hope you share our excitement about virtual reality, the Rift, and the future of gaming.
Designed for gamers, by gamers.
The Rift takes 3D gaming to the next level. There are a number of VR headsets out there, but none that deliver a truly immersive gaming experience. Most products either lack the technical features required for believable immersion or sit at a very high price-point ($20,000+) reserved for the military or scientific community.
We set out to change all that with the Rift, which is designed to maximize immersion, comfort, and pure, uninhibited fun, at a price everyone can afford.
We’re working with the best teams in the industry.
"What I've got now, is, I honestly think the best VR demo probably the world has ever seen."
John Carmack, id Software
"Needless to say, I'm a believer... We're extremely excited here at Epic Games to get the Unreal Engine integrated with Oculus."
Cliff Bleszinski, Design Director Epic Games
"I think this will be the coolest way to experience games in the future. Simply that... that big."
David Helgason, CEO Unity
"I’m really looking forward to getting a chance to program with it and see what we can do.”
Michael Abrash, Valve
"It looks incredibly exciting, if anybody’s going to tackle this set of hard problems, we think that Palmer’s going to do it. So we’d strongly encourage you to support this Kickstarter.”
Gabe Newell, President and Owner Valve

The Oculus Rift is not just another gimmick, this is the future of gaming and virtual reality. You can look around with your head inside the virtual world just as you can in the real world which gives you a huge advantage in first person shooters such as Team Fortress 2 or Half Life 2: Deathmatch (both of which have official support from Valve)
If you are a developer, collector, enthusiast or tinkerer you can order a low resolution development kit now from their website. The current development kit has a 1280x800 display which is divided for each eye, giving you an effective resolution of 640x800 per eye. The field of view is about 110 degree diagonally, having that resolution stretched over your entire field of vision presents an issue knows as the screen door effect where you can see the black space in between pixels (think old arcade games or looking at a CRT TV up close, but not quite that bad). Oculus VR are currently showing off 'HD' prototypes with 1920x1080 displays inside increasing the quality of the image. The 3D effect in the Oculus Rift is unmatched by anything else, characters in Half Life 2 look people sized, headcrabs jumping at you can actually scare the bejeezus out of you, especially with a good set of gaming headphones on. The consumer version is "months, not years" away and many roumers suggest it may have a 2560x1440 display, a much wider field of view and better optics

And an obligatory reactions video

I have a development kit which I use regularly so if you have any questions feel free to shoot me a pm or post a reply here. I am also doing demos in the North London area, so if you are local and wish to try it for yourself you can PM me.

I think the point of this thread is more focused on the technology and non-gaming aspect of the Rift.
Edit: That and non-rift virtual reality technology.
Hardly anyone visits the H&S subforum though.

Eh Facepunch puts things in the wrong subforums all the time. For example, the Steam Sale thread is never really in the Steam subforum. I just stopped caring a long time ago.
Nice to see a thread about it. I got my rift and I wonder if it can be "hacked" I mean like using it as a Utilities instead of a gaming tool.
Lets say I put Two cameras on a helmet connected to a small laptop or computer. I wonder if its possible to use the rift to see with the cameras and zoom or something. I believe it could be used as a cheap alternative to control a Robot or something. It would be pretty nice

You'd need it to be low latency or it would suck ass.

Isnt low latency the whole point of the occulus rift?

I'm talking about from the cameras.

Agreed. It's the kind of thing i would like to see in action. I can easily see a TV show like Robot Rage but using VR instead

Well If microsoft want to work with the Oculus, I would like to see the result of the Kinect combined to the rift in VR. So you see yourself in a game moving as you do in real life.
Oh sweet, another location to bitch about how i'm still waiting on my shipping notification.
