REETOWN, July 29 (Reuters) - The doctor leading Sierra Leone's fight against the worst Ebola outbreak on record died from the virus on Tuesday, the country's chief medical officer said.
The death of Sheik Umar Khan, who was credited with treating more than 100 patients, follows the deaths of dozens of local health workers and the infection of two American medics in neighboring Liberia, highlighting the dangers faced by staff trying to halt the disease's spread across West Africa.
Ebola is believed to have killed 672 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since the outbreak began in February, according to the World Health Organization. The contagious disease, which has no known cure, has symptoms that include vomiting, diarrhea and internal and external bleeding.
The 39-year-old Khan, hailed as a "national hero" by the Health Ministry, had been moved to a treatment ward run by the medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres in the far north of Sierra Leone.
He died on Tuesday afternoon, less than a week after his diagnosis was announced, and on the same day that President Ernest Bai Koroma was due to visit his treatment center in the northeastern town of Kailahun.
"It is a big and irreparable loss to Sierra Leone as he was the only specialist the country had in viral haemorrhagic fevers," said the chief medical officer, Brima Kargbo.
Weak health systems are struggling to contain the disease despite international help ranging from doctors to safety equipment.
The West African airline Asky has suspended flights to and from Sierra Leone and Liberia as concern over the spread of the virus has increased since the first death was reported last week in Nigeria's coastal city of Lagos, home to 21 million people.
Togo-based Asky said it would no longer take on food in Guinea, where the outbreak was first identified. It said that passengers leaving the Guinean capital Conakry would be checked for signs of the disease before departure.
You know it does sound like a fucked up Sci-Fi disease.
Like, its this horrible disease that produces huge tumors and within these huge tumors a disease rapidly produces that eats the internal organs and breaks down the body.
whats crazy too

while we might be on the cusp of beginning to be able to eliminate one of africa's worst diseases, ebola will probably kill off as many people as malaria

from my memory malaria has killed more people than any other disease.
ebola on the other hand has killed very few people.
Malaria is widespread, has a fairly high fatality rate and is transmitted easily through mosquitos.
Ebola occurs in isolated breakouts where it tends to burn out naturally since it's fatality rate is so high, and it's only transmitted through bodily fluids.
They're very different diseases.
Shit, and I just read the article that he got infected the other day. I was really hoping he would pull through, but ebola is just too deadly.
Fuck off, ebola.
Fuck man...Ebola scares the fuck out of me. Such a horrible disease.

If anything it's the opposite of irony.
The family of one of these American doctors that was infected returned to the USA after visiting them and I don't understand why they aren't quarantined. They said they had blood tests and don't have it, but they're going to monitor them for a few weeks to be sure since it can take that long to show symptoms, though usually it's super fast. I don't know why the government doesn't force them into quarantine for that time. All we need is one person to have it and spread it and it's fucktown USA, Population us.
If someone in new york walking around had It the likelihood of it spreading is slim due to how ebola (fortunately) works.just hope it doesn't evolve airbourness them were all dead

Actually, the more diseases you get at once, the less dangerous they get because they're all stuck trying to get inside your body. It's called the Cramped Door theory

No it's not. Hospitals have strict infection prevention and control standards, this is why mass Ebola infections aren't as common in first world countries.
Especially America, we have something called "TJC" or The Joint Comission who's sole purpose in life is to make sure Hospitals are puttying 110% effort into preventing hospital acquired infections, infection control, and safety.
The Government wouldn't have to "force" someone to be quarantined either. Hospitals have specific procedures for patients who have highly transmissable disease (These are called contact precautions).

I always thought smallpox had the highest death toll at around 300 million
