(Reuters) - The United States sent F-22 stealth fighter jets to South Korea on Sunday to join military drills aimed at underscoring the U.S. commitment to defend Seoul in the face of an intensifying campaign of threats from North Korea. The advanced, radar-evading F-22 Raptors were deployed to Osan Air Base, the main U.S. Air Force base in South Korea, from Japan to support ongoing bilateral exercises, the U.S. military command in South Korea said in a statement that urged North Korea to restrain itself. "(North Korea) will achieve nothing by threats or provocations, which will only further isolate North Korea and undermine international efforts to ensure peace and stability in Northeast Asia," the statement said. Saber-rattling on the Korean peninsula drew a plea for peace from Pope Francis, who in his first Easter Sunday address called for a diplomatic solution to the crisis on the Korean peninsula.
Source: http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/31/us-korea-north-usa-f-idUSBRE92U09V20130331 UPDATE: N Korea vows to 'strengthen nuclear weapons
North Korea has pledged to strengthen its nuclear weapons programme, a day after announcing it is in a "state of war" with South Korea, as the region remains tense amid a military build-up by both North and South Korea. Let the NK threat threads begin.
Let the NK threat threads begin.
We passed that point a long time ago.
oh no F22s now the norks can dogfight with oxygen starved pilots in overpriced "stealth" "fighter" jets!!!
Let the NK threat threads begin.
past that long ago now it's it's either a matter time before we find out will they make good on there threat's which they won't ........ I hope I got a friend in SK :(
oh no F22s now the norks can dogfight with oxygen starved pilots in overpriced "stealth" "fighter" jets!!!
And just how are these aircraft somehow inferior?
And just how are these aircraft somehow inferior?
he's just dumb and thinks an F35 and an F22 are the same thing
If it's one thing you don't want to fight it's the F-22. Even the few Mig 29's that NK has have nothing for it
oh no F22s now the norks can dogfight with oxygen starved pilots in overpriced "stealth" "fighter" jets!!!
I'm pretty sure the oxygen problem was reported as fixed a while ago
I'm pretty sure the oxygen problem was reported as fixed a while ago
I actually agree with him, I don't remember hearing about it being fixed.
that was insane sarcasm, the f22 is fine as a fighter but its still 1. expensive 2.moderately unnecessary and 3. doesn't the airforce not want it anymore?
that was insane sarcasm, the f22 is fine as a fighter but its still 1. expensive 2.moderately unnecessary and 3. doesn't the airforce not want it anymore?
I wouldn't, I wouldn't want the F-35 ether, I would work on updating our current fleet or providing an easily transitional upgrade and not making a flying Bradly. But then again what do I know, I'm sensible.
Well if you want to be technical about it, the Chinook isn't even supposed to be able to fly as far as scientific calculations are concerned.
oooh wow maybe they'll actually make it over the ocean before exploding now.
Considering they couldn't even cross the sea of Japan, I'm rather sure we'll be alright. We probably have mortars with better range than their missiles.
I'm just eagerly waiting for a thread that says 'holyshit north Korea invades south Korea' or some shit like that
I actually agree with him, I don't remember hearing about it being fixed.
im not sure lil kim has anything that really could counter it seeing as it was built to be better than the f16 which is built to counter the soviets best MIGs and I doubt that NK, chinas lil puppet state had the top of the line soviet fighters seems like we should pull out some of our old f4 phantoms, make it even [editline]1st April 2013[/editline] or find some retired sabres to throw at them
Or just pull all of our old p-51 mustangs from retirement to make it actually fair.
well we tried that in Korea 1 but the Chinese gave them jets so, let's use our a10s as fighter jets, that'll even things out [editline]1st April 2013[/editline] I bet the gattliing gun would make confetti of any plane its ever used on
They're not really gonna be used for anything other than saber rattling, North Korea has one of the densest air defense systems in the world, and although their air to air capabilities are fairly useless against modern American fighters, nobody on their sane mind would risk flying over the mess of anti air batteries and guns that is North Korea. The reason why nobody has done anything is that North Korea has done a fantastic job entrenching their entire country for the past 50 years, there's literally no viable strategy to attacking them, while at the same time screwing themselves over as they just don't have the firepower to cross the 38th parallel as the weight of their army lies in their static defenses.

The reason no one has invaded North Korea is because of the high number of casualties to civilians (both Southern and Northern) and allied troops. Of course there's more to it than that, but it's the simple answer. If we were to invade it would be Desert Storm all over again, but as I said it wouldn't be bloodless.

Or am I late in saying so and it has by now seeing that the article's from Aug. 2012?
It's a shame it's never flown in combat. Or am I late in saying so and it has by now seeing that the article's from Aug. 2012?
There's been no real need for it. It's focused entirely on air-superiority. Any conflict fought since it's introduction to service hasn't had a competing airforce.
A-10s are definitely not suited for fighter roles, they are a ground attack plane aimed at taking out vehicles and buildings.
True, true. Now, try saying to yourself.. "A-10 Dogfight. A-10... Dogfight". Yes, you're allowed to loosen your belt first, y'know, to avoid discomfort.

It's clearly an Ace Combat ARG.
