Hi, I'm Nigey Nige. Some of you may remember me from such threads as The First Official Facepunch Writing Competition! and fucking nothing else because I'm apparently the only one who gives enough of a shit to start another one. SO! Let's get this kicked off again with the first official Writing General Thread! Creative writing is the process by which all the different facets of the entertainment industry - that's films, books, games, comics, magazines, blogs et cetera - survive and continue to help us forget about our crushing loneliness and inadequate penises by immersing ourselves in fantasy worlds without having to resort to the roleplay subforum. A writer is anyone who produces (or wishes to produce) content for these parts of the industry. There are two types of writing that I work with: Fiction and Games Journalism. This is an extremely popular medium for new writers. With the advent of the internet and ADD, there are thousands of young people who only give a shit about two things: video games and arguing about them. This means that there is a veritable ocean of blogspots, livejournals and forum posts detailing peoples' opinions on video games. Fortunately for you, most of these people have little to no talent and lack the dedication to improve. Less competition if you decide to try your hand! If you genuinely think you have something to offer to sites like Kotaku, Giantbomb or The Escapist, I have some experience which I am perfectly happy to share with you. Firstly you need a portfolio. I recommend Bitmob. It's a moderated news site, where anyone can submit an article. You'll know if you're any good or not if your article is approved for the front page! I've had a couple of things up there, and the community is always helpful, active and will give you solid criticism - which is gold for a budding writer. It really is that easy to become a published video games journalist! Look, I'll show you. If you're trying to crack into the industry then maybe you'll get lucky. The more articles you write, the better you'll get and the more people will remember your name. Just pick an interesting topic, like any of the ones listed on the front page, and write to your heart's content. All you need to be a successful games journalist is a proactive attitude, friendly style and the ability to write about stuff that matters to the community. Many well-known posters on Facepunch are more than capable of pulling it off. So good luck with your budding internet career! However, if you're into something a little more... creative, then read on, my adventurous friend. Fiction writers are those crucial, dedicated, unbalanced few who took part in the short story competition a while back. It is here that the largest skill gap is found - from Tolkien to Tara Gillesbie (think twice before clicking that link), here we have the greatest variation. However, fiction writers are tricky to find on the internet. There are many specialist sites - Writer's Cafe, WritingForums.org - but the most useful resource I have ever come across is the site for NaNoWriMo. National Novel Writing Month is a challenge to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. I took part (and failed miserably) last year. This year, I was late to the party. I'm not going to finish, but I have courageously put together an almost-complete timeline for my story, which I shall write next month. It only takes 1667 words a day, and by the end of the month you will have written a novel! How many people can say that, hmm? The community is great, giving out free ideas and advice 24/7. There's some handy tools on the site as well, to keep you motivated. Write or Die is a word processor that starts to wipe your work if you idle for too long. My totally bitchin' setup, with character profiles on the other side: Fiction writing is my personal passion, and I've always got four or five projects going at once. There's a couple I'm really excited about, though, and have resolved to make into complete novels before next NaNoWriMo. We saw some glimpses of real genius in the Short Story competition, and their hard work did not go unrewarded. Fancy getting some fabulous prizes for yourself? Support the hosting of another writing competition! Post in your local Writing General Thread today! So if you've got an interest in writing, got some work you want to show off or get criticism on, need ideas or help with your latest bit of writing - or if you think we're all a bunch of fags and want to insult us with image macros - then post away! Links! Nigey Nige's Ambient Writing Playlist Write or Die Writer's Cafe Useful Links for Writers Here (hopefully) we will keep a repository of links to facepuncher's blogs, articles and stories! Post in the thread if you want to be featured in the OP!
We have a subforum for this, you know.
i wrote the bible
I'll show facepunch my A* English coursework when it's been submitted and the deadline for the last piece of coursework of this syllabus has gone (This is that course's last year). [editline]24th November 2010[/editline]
i wrote the bible
It's a shit book with tonnes of contradictions and evil morals, I don't know how it's got such a big following. They think you're a god.
i wrote the bible
that's just a bad Qur'an fanfic [editline]24th November 2010[/editline]
We have a subforum for this, you know.
Welp. If a moderator wants to move it then that'd be grand.
I came second place last contest :smug: I'd post some of my writing on here but the first six chapters of the book I'm writing are currently on paper. I'm planning to write them all up around christmas time, I might post it then.

Make sure you post that shit, man.
Belated congratulations on the contest, and up-to-date congrats on getting six chapters written by hand! I'm interested to see what people think, my main literary inspirations while writing it are 'on the road', 'the great gatsby' and 'paradise lost' so I'm hoping it'll come out good. I mean, I plan to make my living this way one day, I'm currently doing some research into the publishing game and whatnot.

My current project takes inspiration from the Iliad, Achilles in Vietnam and Generation Kill, so it's gonna be a bit of a strange one. Also a bit of Pitch Black thrown in too. Edit: Don't forget Aliens.
Is there guidelines concerning length or the topic?
Is there guidelines concerning content or the topic?
Nope. Questions, work, discussion are all welcome here. Edit: Although I guess it'd be handy to know if we'd like another writing contest and whether anyone wants to help organise it? Also, themes.
I love writing. It's the only thing I'm actually good at. I also hate it, because whenever I try to start something I'll end up pouring hours into it during the first week or so, then end up getting bored with it. Every. Single. Time.
Buy my books! Christy Leigh Stewart Look me up on Amazon
I'd love to write a book, I can put together complex characters and great storylines, but my imagery sucks.
Can I read some of your stuff?
ok here goes heres a story i just wrote THE FORUMS IGNITED LIKE WILDFIRE AS FIRERAIN MADE ANOTHER SPECTUCULAR POST, SUBFORUMS FELL SILENT AS THE AWED POSTERS FLOCKED TO HIS THREAD. "A FIRERAIN POST?! I DON'T BELIEVE IT!" THEY EXCLAIMED TO ONE ANOTHER, THEIR DISBELIEF SHATTERED LIKE A POORLY MADE MIRROR, ONE YOU WOULD BUY FROM PRIMARK IF PRIMARK SOLD MIRRORS WHICH THEY DON'T. BUT IF THEY DID, IT WOULD BE A LOW QUALITY MIRROR. THAT'S ALL I'M TRYING TO SAY HERE. THAT IF YOU HAD A MIRROR FROM PRIMARK IT WOULD SHATTER IN A SIMILARLY DRAMATIC FASHION AS TO THE POSTER'S DISBELIEF. IT WOULDN'T BE ONE OF THOSE SHATTER-PROOF ONES. THEN AGAIN IF PRIMARK MADE MIRRORS PERHAPS THEY'D JUST USE A REFLECTIVE PLASTIC RATHER THAN ACTUAL POLISHED GLASS, WHICH MEANS THAT MAYBE THE POSTERS DISBELIEF WOULD NOT SHATTER LIKE A PRIMARK MIRROR, BUT UNLIKE A PRIMARK MIRROR. ONE WAY OR ANOTHER, THEIR DISBELIEF WAS SHATTERED. "F...FIRERAIN? POSTING AGAIN?" MUTTERED A VOICE FROM THE DARKNESS, THE FAINT GLOW OF HIS DOZEN OR SO MONITORS BARELY ILLUMINATING HIS BLOATED FORM, HIDDEN IN THE GLOOM OF HIS CAVERNOUS BASEMENT. "I THOUGHT I BANNED HIM FOR THE LAST TIME!" THE MAN LEANS FORWARD, HIS GNARLED FACE SUDDENLY LIT BY A POP-UP FOR LARGE BREASTED WOMEN RIDING AROUND ON HORSEBACK. GARRY'S CLUMSY, CHEETO-STAINED FINGERS NERVOUSLY TWITCHED TOWARDS HIS KEYBOARD, DESPERATELY TRYING TO OPEN UP THE MODERATORS WINDOW. HIS WORDS SHOWED THE TRUE ODIUM OF HIS SOUL AS HE SPEWED FORTH HATRED ON HIS INEFFICIENT MOD TEAM "STOP NOT BANNING THIS...THIS...INSTIGATOR. HOW AM I MEANT TO LOOK AT ALL THESE POSTS WHEN HE IS...POSTING SO....INSIDIOUSLY." GARRY SPAT, ALTHOUGH NOT LITERALLY, OK PERHAPS A LITTLE BIT LITERALLY BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT I WANT TO EMPHASISE AS YOU MUST KEEP IN MIND THAT HE IS ACTUALLY TYPING THIS I AM TRYING TO DRAMATICALLY PORTRAY AN INTERNET POST NOT AN EASY FEAT. "WEST SIDE." SAID FIRERAIN. the end
is this prose only or what
dont matter waht it is nothin gonna top my work
is this prose only or what
says general writing, I'd guess it includes poetry, prose and all other forms of writing. though nothing is going to beat Firerain's work, even James Joyce is scared now, and he dead.
says general writing, I'd guess it includes poetry, prose and all other forms of writing.
Yeah, it's meant to be like the 'what are you working on' thread from the programming subforum. Maybe should have gone in the creationism corner? In other news, I need to draw up a timeline. This novel-length shit is more complicated than I thought. I haven't been writing as much lately, but that competition you hosted a few months back was wicked cool. Here's the latest I've written: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1avFiaLoIDrljRGtvs2c-YBMHwJQyj9zqudfVTypyvlM/edit?authkey=CJeagaQD&hl=en&pli=1#
I scored a 570 on my SAT II Literature. :saddowns:
I'll show facepunch my A* English coursework when it's been submitted and the deadline for the last piece of coursework of this syllabus has gone (This is that course's last year).
I totally ripped off a load of HL2's ideas when writing my GCSE english coursework and got 39/40 or something like that :v:

I've found that I don't like the way my third person stories come out, I find I personally can get a lot more emotion across when I'm using a first person narrator. You seem to get that sort of feel that I'd like from third person, which has inspired me to work on my third person writing.
E: Firerain sucks.
thats bad
