Germany bans the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster from hanging up official notices
Despite constitutional guarantees of religious freedom, a German court has banned the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster from hanging up official notices. Chief Pastafarian, Brother Spaghettus, has vowed to fight on.
Brother Spaghettus had a bad day on Wednesday. A court in the eastern city of Frankfurt an der Oder announced that his religion, the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, had no right to hang official signs at the entrances to the town of Templin, Brandenburg, giving information about their weekly services, next to those of the local Catholic and Protestant churches.
There is still hope for Germany.
Why does this even exist... :goodjob:

The religion exists because in Kansas they proposed teaching creationism and someone said 'Why only teach one religion, who's to say this one shouldn't be taught'
The ban on the religion exists because, well, idk, read the article
Germany doesn't fuck around with not-religions claiming to be religions. They banned scientology too.
German court confirmed for worshipping the Invisible Pink Unicorn.

It is a religion, which I don't get why people can say one thing is nonsense because they don't approve so that means it isn't. If someone has the belief a flying Spaghetti is the god and they worship etc then it is a religion. Which it's all made up in the end so I don't get why people don't just accept everyone's insanity.
I personally wouldn't mind it, its not like they are Scientology but its Germany, we love our stubborn bureaucracy and are picky with signs and all that stuff. :v:

Cults that have not been validated by a thousand years of murder
Sorry, I should explain what I said a bit more.
FSM counts as a religion NOW since some people actually picked it up as a religious doctrine but it originated as a protest against the teaching of evolution in Kansas(?) schools, and was used to prove the point of "if we can teach that why dont we teach this too", which is why I stated that it was a non-religion, but eh, I don't really care enough. Believe whatever you want to, not my problem.
However, Scientology is just a pyramid scheme.

I now believe that butterflies are all incarnations of god. I pray to my butterfly god and when I die I will go to butterfly heaven.
Is my religion a "non-religion"?

It begs the question of what is the qualifier? Does the mere knowledge of its exact origins or its purpose make it ineligible to being considered a "real" religion?
"The suit has been denied," Judge Sabine Selbig said in court. "It does not depend on whether the organization is a world-view community or not."
The judge ruled that the government of the state of Brandenburg had legitimately overruled a verbal agreement to allow the four signs, which Brother Spaghettus, aka Rüdiger Weida, chairman of the religious society, had made with Templin mayor Detlef Tabbert in December 2014.
Sounds like they didn't actually have any *right* to put up their signs, it was always up to Brandenburg's government to allow people to do it. Which I guess makes sense in this case where the signs in question are used beneath/next to normal street signs - without any control, people could turn the city into a clusterfuck that's difficult to navigate. FSM is meant to poke fun at religion, so it's not surprising to me that the government saw it as exactly the kind of jokes that don't actually provide a real service to the community and would mainly just confuse drivers.
Which may or may not apply, no idea how big FSM is in Brandenburg and whether they wanted to put up the sign because it would actually be useful to a lot of people or mainly just to have a laugh at having to be taken as seriously as the established religions and churches.
The difference between FSM and Scientology is that Scientology is a tax-haven money-making scam disguised as a religion. FSM is not.

Christianity is arguably a money-making scam, too.

I've also heard people say that it was created as a refutation to the "well, you can't prove god DOESN'T exist :)" argument, because if you can't disprove a flying spaghetti monster, it must exist.
Though the difference is that the spaghetti monster really does exist, I can't wait til I'm dead and get to be caressed by his noodly arms

A case can certainly be made about the founding of Scientology being for that purpose, but the average Scientologist believes in their religion in the same was as a Christian, Muslim, or anyone else does.

Every religion is arguably a money/power attaining scam to some extent.

Tell people they are guilty/in debt (to god, family, universe), the principle of the debt could never possibly be paid (because it would imply you are on equal terms to the creditor ie god) but you need to pay interest (donations, sacrifices) in order to be a good person.
400-500ad buddhist temples amassed so much wealth (and slaves and property) that they caused economic issues in china, to the point that the state had to do periodic crack downs releasing the slaves and reintroducing the wealth back into the economy.
Before anyone thinks that all of Germany agrees:
For the Brandenburg Infrastructure Ministry, on the other hand, the case is straightforward. "The question was whether the group is a religious group or not," spokesman Steffen Streu told DW. "As far as the road signs are concerned, there are clear rules - a recognized religious community is allowed to do that."
Atheism isn't a religion. It's the lack of a belief in a god or deity, and is classified as an irreligion.
The religious really don't want to start playing the game of defining religion. It will only end poorly for them and a lot of deeply religious people understand that.

germany has a different take on what constitutes a legitimate faith, their government takes a more hands on approach.

Atheism isn't a doctrine, you can't attempt to group any two atheist things together just in the premise of them both being atheist, it's like trying to link two governments on the sole fact that neither of them contained a myth for mummies
