Responders still are trying to evaluate the destruction caused by the flames that spread with little warning from the Great Smoky Mountains.
3 dead, I believe the fires are still going even though we had rain last night. I always go here at least once every two years or so, it really sucks to see it burn like this. It's one of my favorite places to visit. Hopefully no more people die and they can get everything rebuilt better than ever.
the real loss is the mountain cabins and landscape, forest fires are going to devastate the scenic views
the real loss is the people who have died in the fire, and everyone who have lost their homes.

It IS a really cool small town. You park your car parallel with everyone else along the Little Pigeon River then you just walk through it, lots of little shops, candy and food stores, the Ripley's museum, the works. It's like some small Norwegian town or something. And it's always pretty cool and humid due to the mountains and the 'clouds' of mist actually being pretty close to you/around you. There's a chair lift that takes you from the town to a mountain peak, too The weather's been perfect there, and was perfect, and it started around the chimney tops. I'll tell you what started the fire, someone throwing their lit cigarette to the side of the trail/over the cliff at the top of the Chimney Top trail
Fortunately nearby Pigeon Forges (The sister tourist trap to Gatlinburg) and Seveirville are mostly unscathed. We've been getting almost non-stop rain for the past day/half here in Knoxville, and its helped contain/diminish the blazes. I really hope this is the end of it, my favorite hiking spot (Chimney Tops) has burned down. Have a friend that lives not far from here - he's been really devastated about this. I wasn't aware there were any deaths from the event.
