Is there a reason behind the weird facial tics and repeat hand movements? Is he trying to convey a plot?
I expected something totally different, but I'm not disappointed.

I'm guessing it's a method of distraction, something a lot of magicians utilize to keep the audience from noticing subtle hand movements or trick props.

The guy is haunted by hallucinated red balls which cause him trouble and play pranks on him (like preventing him from drinking water), and no matter what he does he can't get rid of them
