The photo above is a Microsoft classic, showing the company’s founders, Paul Allen and Bill Gates, surrounded by personal computers in 1981. Fast forward 32 years, and check out the picture below, taken this week at Allen’s Living Computer Museum in Seattle.

Yes, even the computers are the same models, for the most part. Gates is in a pullover, Allen in a suit jacket. About the biggest difference, apart from the three decades, is that Allen is missing the beard and tie. Pretty awesome.
The picture was taken during a celebration of computing pioneers at the museum. It’s notable in part because of the rift that emerged between the two Microsoft founders following the publication of Allen’s book, Idea Man, and its unvarnished portrayal of Gates.
[Update: A spokeswoman for Allen tells us that the picture was taken last night at the museum, which features working models of many vintage PCs and mainframes. Allen hosted a small gathering of friends, many of them computing and technology pioneers. The museum staff worked in advance to track down the models to recreate the classic shot.]
it doesn't help that Bill still looks like a kid in that picture
It would've been more interesting if they had the same pose, but had various modern-day PCs in the new photo.

Microsoft's early work was a little too refined for my tastes, but when the MSX came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and mechanically. The whole system has a clear, functional architecture, and a new sheen of remarkable engineering that really gives the system a big boost. They've been compared to Google, but I think Microsoft have a far more bitter, surefire approach to business.
The angle is wrong. The lighting is wrong......Oh well.
It amuses me how Paul managed to get hold of all those systems. Then again his museum is so crammed full of mainframes I still can't wrap my head around him getting them in working condition.
Does Bill Gates cut his own hair or something?
bill gates is a billionare and yet he cant afford a good camera.
How old is Bill in the original picture? He looks so damn young... Imagine if he'd known at the time he was was going to become the richest human to ever walk planet Earth...
You never see shit like this coming.

26. That first picture was taken in the same year that he bought MS-DOS from some dude for $50000 and sold the license to IBM (and later a bunch of other companies) which catapulted him into being one of the youngest and richest people on the planet.
Hell, he's a brilliant guy. Before even leaving prep school he and Allen got banned for using exploits to get more computer time (back when computers weren't computers, but terminals that connected to mainframes.) When he was 20 he bluffed MITS (the makers of the Altair 8800, the first microcomputer, that started the home microcomputer revolution, and spawned stuff like the Commodore 64) into thinking he had a BASIC interpreter for the Altair, when he didn't have neither an Altair nor an interpreter. When MITS showed interest, he and Allen went and made an Altair emulator to run on his minicomputer, then made the BASIC interpreter for it. All in a couple weeks.
He also got arrested that one time.

While "high res" doesn't always mean "good", I think there's a lower bound for what we can still consider "good".
It looks like they took it with this thing:

Found a nice hi-res version:

Nah man, it was because of a sick bulldozer race

[sp]It wasn't but according to the director this actually happened[/sp]
Would have been more effective if they'd been surrounded by modern PCs.
