Police ordered the structure evacuated, but the owners allegedly told the more than 3,000 people employed there to return to work. The building's owner, Mohammed Sohel Rana, only had a permit for a five-story structure. But he added three stories illegally, according to Abdul Halim, an official with Savar's engineering department. The building housed at least four factories producing clothes for leading Western retailers. High street giant Primark confirmed one of its suppliers occupied the second floor of the building.
original sources:http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/25/world/asia/bangladesh-building-collapse.html?_r=0 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-22275597 http://www.seattlepi.com/news/world/article/Army-says-32-dead-in-Bangladesh-building-collapse-4458466.php#photo-4519846
An eight-story building in Bangladesh that housed several garment factories collapsed on Wednesday morning, killing at least 70 people, injuring hundreds of others, and leaving an unknown number of people trapped in the rubble, according to Bangladeshi officials and media outlets.... ‘'We had sent two people inside the building and we could rescue at least 20 people,” Mr. Humayun said. “They also told us that at least 100 to 150 people are injured and about 50 dead people are still trapped inside this floor.'’
Damn... Somehow, it being a sweatshop makes it all the more depressing to me.
I am guessing the place was used to hell had been needed to be fixed for years
this is depressing 3 people die in a bombing in the modern civilized world and everyone goes apeshit the media barely addresses an almost 100 death toll this is the kind of shit that's preventable, that needs media attention, not a manhunt for the enjoyment of the people looking at their tvs
it's really shitty. if this happened in america there would be a ton of building code legislation thrown around.
This already happened with the triangle shirtwaist fire incident: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triangle_Shirtwaist_Factory_fire

Both are horrible, but terrorism is done with the purpose of killing people, accidents are not. There's an average of about 10 people that die in the US every single day from drowning, and you don't hear about those either. ..then again, the Texas Plant was an accident, yet that was all over the news for a long time, possibly due to it happening right after the Boston Bombings.
this is depressing 3 people die in a bombing in the modern civilized world and everyone goes apeshit
That's got more to do with attempted mass-murder rather than negligence..

Its not about if its an accident or a mass homicide, its about where you check the news. Bangladesh news are probably asploding right now, meanwhile bbc can pass it with 1 article and focus back on what is most important for them. The places you check for news such as here, is fulfilled with americans, same as 4chan, and thats why the majority is talking about it. People care for whats happening around them, and when it happens in america, shit loses control because internet is full of americans. Same would happen if it was in some other country. ARRGH I CANT EXPLAIN MY THOUGHTS TL;DR : No matter what happened, if it concerns America, you will hear it because the majority of sites people uses are in english and full of americans to support the back of it.
to be fair I wasn't even scanning news articles when I saw it, was just searching for things about Bangladesh :-( [editline]24th April 2013[/editline]
More than 1,000 people were injured

to be fair I wasn't even scanning news articles when I saw it, was just searching for things about Bangladesh :-( [editline]24th April 2013[/editline]
That is like, the best proof i can give :v: I wonder if anyone here have heard about earthquake happened before in Van , in Turkey? We had quite big number of deaths. Our news were blowing up, yet i didnt see #vanearthquake on TT listings. Tbh, there is no free media. Only things people wants to hear.

It still would've gotten a lot of media attention it just got a little more attention because of the Boston bombings. There's no reason why this would be all over American news. It's in Bangladesh not America. I'm sure every news outlet will probably give this some air time but there's no reason to give it huge coverage.

Then though it wasn't overshadowed by an event in the United States, but people still forgot about it a few days later.
Crimson April continues...
Police said the factory owners had ignored warnings not to allow their workers into the building after cracks were noticed on Tuesday - cracks which, according to reports, had even attracted the interest of local news stations. The owners of the factory are now said to have gone into hiding.
just horrible
Crimson April continues...
there are 1.8 deaths every second worldwide. that's 4,733,542.8 deaths in a month.
there are 1.8 deaths every second worldwide. that's 4,733,542.8 deaths in a month.
How many of those are from collapsing buildings?
I hope Iphone I ordered isn't delayed. (User was banned for this post ("Shitpost/Trolling" - Swebonny))
How many of those are from collapsing buildings?
idk? that's irrelevant to the point. calling any month out for an extra hundred deaths and giving it a scary buzz name is silly. every month has a pretty high death toll

Devastating tragedy that should have been prevented.
holy shitballs, 340+?
holy shitballs, 340+?
Goes to show how many people they cram into clothing factories there. The fact that inspections were made and odd things were noticed, it's a ridiculously negligent act to pass the building off as safe. If it were an earthquake it'd be a different issue but this is so awful.
Over 340 people have been killed? jesus christ.
So basically the media and others are trying to blame Western companies and gov'ts about this when in reality the country's federal gov't should have some fucking standards and actually check the buildings that their people are working in are safe. It is not the company's responsibility or fault if they bought an unsafe building OR they had it built, it is the duty of the government to make sure the buildings are safe, and safely built IN THE FIRST PLACE.
and would you guess it... PRIMARK had one of the floor full of workers make clothes for them. That's just great.
update 2: http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2013/04/28/bangladesh-building-collapse.html (video in source) owner of building arrested while trying to flee
...
Genuine terrorism is successful because the media gives them the attention they need. I'd much rather have them give deeper insight into worse matters instead of spamming every day about a single bombing. It's just that their priorities are too focused on certain things.
