Johnny Depp in early talks for Doctor Strange; may have problem with the schedule
It was only a matter of time before Marvel Studios started courting Johnny Depp to play one of its superheroes.
Mouse House’s main man is in very early discussions with Marvel to take on the role of eccentric magician Steven Strange in “Doctor Strange,” which the company has long been developing as a solo pic to join the ranks of its “Iron Man,” “Thor” and “Captain America” franchises. “Ant-Man” is another character it hopes to launch in 2015 as a standalone franchise around one of the comicbook company’s heroes.
Yet if he sparks to the role, Depp would play the Master of the Mystic Arts, a former neurosurgeon who becomes the next Sorcerer Supreme and primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Marvel Comics vets Stan Lee and Steve Ditko co-created the character in 1963. It would surely be a showy role that Depp could disappear into and make his own like he did with “Pirates of the Caribbean’s” Jack Sparrow and “Alice in Wonderland’s” Mad Hatter.
But any talks would have to focus on whether the actor has time to take on the role. He has several films waiting for a greenlight at Disney, including a fifth “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Alice in Wonderland.”
Still Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has long wanted the Doctor Strange character to star in his own solo film as a way to make a movie about magic the way “Guardians of the Galaxy” pushes it into the sci-fi and space genre and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” into political thrillers.
Character fits in with the cinematic universe Marvel is building, with Strange having paired up with Thor and the Avengers, along with Spider-Man, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four to battle enemies in the comicbooks. It’s feasible that Doctor Strange would eventually be featured in an “Avengers” sequel.
There is no word yet on when Marvel is hoping to release “Doctor Strange,” but it wouldn’t be until at least 2016. Marvel has “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Ant-Man” bowing before then.
Even though I don't like Doctor Strange, I actually might take a look if Depp takes the role.
Doctor Strange is pretty cool, way too strong for entertaining stories where he's actually you know, not going to just win anyways.
But Johnny Depp? Done deal.

Holy shit yeah - Johhny Depp can make pretty much any role interesting.
-squints eyes, sits down-
Go oooon...
I immediately envisioned a drunken Dr. Orpheus from the Venture Brothers.

I'm pretty sure Dr. Orpheus is is a joke on Dr. Strange.
really wish every "weird or zaney" Hollywood role wasn't given solely to Depp, I'd really like to see someone other than him get the roll.
Doctor Strange is one of my favorite characters from marvel.
Looking forward to it, hope he does well! (if he gets the job)

He's very obviously a parody of him.
They look exactly the same, except Orpheus isnt wearing tights.
Funny. When I saw this article I assumed they meant Doctor Hugo Strange, and I tried to picture Johnny Depp as this guy:

Hugo's always been known as "Professor" though.

This is the Doctor Strange the article is referring to in case people didn't know:

Thought it was this guy they were talking about all along.
God damnit why are their names that similar.
Wait, I thought Viggo Mortensen had already been cast as Dr. Strange. I didn't realize they were still undecided.
I got vaguely excited this was Dr. Fate from DC, until I remembered they are two vaguely similarly named characters from two different companies. I blame Justice League Unlimited.
Wait, I thought Viggo Mortensen had already been cast as Dr. Strange. I didn't realize they were still undecided.
Yeah, I really wanted to see Viggo in that role too. Depp can still do a pretty good job though.
I really want to see Dormammu, but I feel like he won't be the big villain for the first film.
johnny depp is a horrible actor
He's not terrible, everyone keeps wanting him to be Jack Sparrow in a different outfit every damn movie, he can act in so many roles, but people like only one of them, and that makes him look bad.
Dammit, I want Mel Gibson as Doctor Strange.
Shuma-Gorath confirmed for phase 3
The animated movie series was pretty fantastic. Not sure about Depp but this is one movie that interests me. Just gotta wait.

He is typecast a lot, but his range is pretty dynamic and he's quite convincing in the roles he does while bringing a unique take to them. He's not the best in the biz, but I think he would be great for this role because of his skill set

Would rather have Mortensen.

IMO, he's one of the best actors out there right now - if people stopped associating him with Jack Sparrow, he'd probably play in more interesting roles as well.
If you don't believe me watch any one of these movies:
Blow
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Donny Brasco
Ed Wood
Arizona Dream
The Rum Diary
All of these (except The Rum Diary) came out before Pirates of the Caribbean and you can really see him for what he's worth.
