• UK prisoners lose appeal on right to vote - "a victory for common sense" claims David Cameron

The Supreme Court has dismissed appeals from two prisoners over the right to vote under European Union rules. Prime Minister David Cameron told the Commons that the ruling was "a great victory for common sense". The European Court of Human Rights has previously told the UK to end the blanket ban on prisoners voting. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-24545294
Cameron just wants as few people voting as possible so that he can stay in office.
Cameron just wants as few people voting as possible so that he can stay in office.
Ain't gonna fucking happen.
What the hell does "common sense" have to do with this? How is it a victory?
If youre a citizen, you have a right to vote. Unless prisoners in the UK are stripped of their citizenship upon incarceration this is dumb.
If youre a citizen, you have a right to vote. Unless prisoners in the UK are stripped of their citizenship upon incarceration this is dumb.
You can't vote in prison in the US either.
"common sense" god i fucking hate that phrase
Criminals are people too you know I don't see how one of the most fundamental democratic rights being taken away is a victory for anyone really
If youre a citizen, you have a right to vote. Unless prisoners in the UK are stripped of their citizenship upon incarceration this is dumb.
That's how it's always worked over here, this was to decide if they should be able to vote, personally I think they should be able to but on very specific things and only if the government chooses for them to vote in it. It's a very confusing grey zone, many over here believe no one who is incarcerated should be able to vote, this is anyone from getting caught for minor offenses to murder. It really raises the question if Bob who committed credit fraud is any better than John who murdered 3 people on terms of voting.
If you're in prison for life without parole, I don't see how voting would affect you anyway. Other than that, I don't see why prisoners shouldn't vote.
I can't vote if I've been caught for a crime but what about if I'm a successful criminal who's so far evaded the law?
This seems pretty dodgy..
If you're in prison for life without parole, I don't see how voting would affect you anyway. Other than that, I don't see why prisoners shouldn't vote.
because things on the outside effect prisoners prison isnt another dimension
Obviously prisoners would vote themselves out somehow. I seriously don't see why a prisoner should lose that right, since it doesn't really risk anybodies lives like mobility rights. Not allowing them to vote might actually give the ruling party an incentive to pass laws that lock away people who would probably side with the opposition.
I'm okay with this. How are they even supposed to know who they want to vote for if they're locked up?
This seems pretty dodgy..
It is quite dodgy, although its not likely to happen here (ever) depriving prisoners of the right to vote is a common tactic to rig elections..
I'm okay with this. How are they even supposed to know who they want to vote for if they're locked up?
They're in prison, not the Big Brother house.
Good, if you have done something to end up in prison you have likely done something that has gone against your country and society and should therefore have your vote forfeit.
I don't see why people who are detrimental to society should be allowed to vote on matters of how it is best to run our communities and country as a whole.
I don't see why people who are detrimental to society should be allowed to vote on matters of how it is best to run our communities and country as a whole.
You're assuming they all are. Imagine if conservatives applied that logic to Welfare recipents.
because things on the outside effect prisoners prison isnt another dimension
when will we be able to send convicted felons to the prison dimension
Good, if you have done something to end up in prison you have likely done something that has gone against your country and society and should therefore have your vote forfeit.
That's stupid. Society's laws are to be determined by everyone, not just people the majority likes. Anything else opens the door to tyranny.
Good
They're in prison, not the Big Brother house.
Yeah I'm sure prisoners read The Guardian and watch The Sunday Politics Show.
I don't see why people who are detrimental to society should be allowed to vote on matters of how it is best to run our communities and country as a whole.
Because the more rights you take away, the more you dehumanise prisoners, and the harder it is to reintegrate them into society. If anything, we should be encouraging offenders to take an interest in politics so that they can learn to take a positive role in society instead of a negative one.
Yeah I'm sure prisoners read The Guardian and watch The Sunday Politics Show.
stop
Yeah I'm sure prisoners read The Guardian and watch The Sunday Politics Show.
In some US prisons they smoke weed and post on Facebook.
Yeah I'm sure prisoners read The Guardian and watch The Sunday Politics Show.
It's not like much of the general public does those things either
In some US prisons they smoke weed and post on Facebook.
If you knew a man who knew how to get things maybe Are you implying that's allowed or something?
Yeah I'm sure prisoners read The Guardian and watch The Sunday Politics Show.
All people in prison aren't idiots, you know. I'm sure a lot of them like to stay informed about the world around them.
