• Ukraine military push appears to lose momentum in the east
Donetsk, Ukraine (CNN) -- Ukraine's armored vehicles rolled Wednesday, but its attempt to take back eastern towns from pro-Russian militants seemed to stall. In Donetsk, six armored vehicles sent into the nearby city of Kramatorsk in the morning later showed up carrying Russian flags in Slaviansk. Russian Ambassador to the EU Vladimir Chizhov told CNN's Christiane Amanpour those Ukrainian soldiers "preferred to switch sides and join the people." Ukraine's Defense Ministry said the vehicles had been seized by militants. In Slaviansk, north of Kramatorsk and about 100 miles from the border with Russia, pro-Russian militants now appear to be firmly in control of the town, according to CNN's Nick Paton Walsh on the ground. On the diplomatic front, President Obama told CBS News that Russia faces new sanctions. "What I've said consistently is that each time Russia takes these kinds of steps that are designed to destabilize Ukraine and violate their sovereignty, that there are going to be consequences and what you've already seen is the Russian economy weaker, capital fleeing out of Russia," Obama said.
http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/16/world/europe/ukraine-crisis/
Great, all the more reason for Russia to keep going. If the military and government doesn't find it's balls then the entire country will be hacked apart.

They couldn't even quell Euro Maiden unrest. Shitty government.
They seem to be stuck between fearing that if they try to squash the pro-Russian Militants more people will rise up against them, and wanting to do something about it. If they start killing people people will get angry. If they don't do anything Russias going to have more territory. They think they're in a damned if you do damned if you don't situation.

Unless NATO does something meaningful, I can only imagine a very broken Ukraine in the future. This is all pretty terrible but currently, the only way things are going to improve for the Ukrainians are if Russia completely backs off for whatever reason or if, as I said, NATO steps in. Neither of those things seem possible given the rhetoric and stancing that NATO has done. Which is really fucking sad because the NATO was made exactly for this purpose, to stop Russia/the Soviet Union from being an asshole to Europe.

NATO exists so the Soviet Union couldn't just go "whoop annexed Germany, whoop annexed Finland, whoop annexed Fance"- It exists so they they couldn't just take over Europe piecemeal, because with NATO an attack on one was an attack on all. Most importantly, Ukraine is not in NATO, so while Europe feels threatened and forces are being deployed, NATO has no obligation to act yet.
