A new hit dating show in China decided to let parents choose partners for their kids. The first episode of the weekly show Chinese Dating aired on Christmas Eve. And it’s hard to watch if you’re a woman. The parents on the show grilled bachelorettes with questions like “Can you do housework?” They also brutally rejected a 40-year-old divorcee and single mom. (In China, divorced women are often considered damaged goods.) Some critics called the show a revival of outdated arranged marriages (link in Chinese). Many say it reflects the “Giant Infant” culture described by psychologist Wu Zhihong in her acclaimed book The Giant Baby Nation, which examines psychological problems in modern China caused by collectivism and blind filial piety. On the other hand, the show also seems to be somewhat progressive. It featured two successful female entrepreneurs out of the three bachelorettes. And it’s hosted by China’s favorite openly transgender hostess. In a way, this wacky and cringeworthy show illustrates modern China’s divided values towards relationship and gender. The 40-year-old divorcee’s story is an example of the tensions between two divided generations. One is stuck in conservative values (parents wanting virgins and baby makers), and another has become more open-minded (like the 23-year-old guy who wanted to defy his mother and choose the 40-year-old divorcee.)
http://qz.com/874908/the-new-hit-chinese-dating-show-lets-parents-pick-partners-for-their-kids/ What the fuck Video in source
The parents on the show grilled bachelorettes with questions like “Can you do housework?”
This would be an interesting show nonetheless despite how odd this is.
its 2015+2, why are we still arranging marriages?
Same reason that online dating is a thing, because it gives some kind of protection.
Didn't MTV do something similar already ? A person would go out on a date with a parent and then would pick a "real" date based on the parent. Something like that. And that was over 10 years ago, I'm sure they did stranger things since.
I know I've seen ads for something very much like this about a year ago while my girlfriend has been watching Say Yes To The Dress on TLC. It's not exactly a new concept.
Chinese dating shows are so bizarre. I used to watch this show called If You Are The One with my family on SBS 2, and the whole concept was that this guy would come in and try and win over one of the twenty or so women on the show, by showing them videos about the guy and asking him questions. It was actually very interesting to watch due to all the cultural differences between China and the west. Sometimes women would buzz out over the most bizarre things. Like one time, this guy's friend said he was a "good friend" or something along those lines, and half of the women buzzed out. And they always used weird music, like I heard the Pirates of the Carribean music a few times. And they always play O Fortuna if the guy fails to get a date.
[t]http://wishcrys.files.wordpress.com/2014/10/image1.jpeg?w=648[/t]
This show already exist in my country for long time, its called "Take me out" Except,it doesn't involve any parents
Is this actually that controversial or weird? With so many shit/weird shows on western TV this seems pretty tame to me.
I think the controversial part is where the parents are asking incredibly sexist question or have very sexist standards.
So this is not the predecessor to arranged marriage how? Oh right don't worry guys its just a tv show that makes it ~modern~
I know I've seen ads for something very much like this about a year ago while my girlfriend has been watching Say Yes To The Dress on TLC. It's not exactly a new concept.
Isn't there a show on TLC now where its.. literally parents picking the dates?
My parents tried to do the same thing by picking a date partner for me but I told them I already have a waifu.
Cold hands = 'cold womb' = no babies. :sbhj:
my dad tried to do something like this. he really wants me to marry an indonesian girl to keep a pure ethnic bloodline or some ridic shit like that so he always sends me pics of his friends' daughters and tells me about her and i always say no doesn't help that i'm not interested in girls and i can't tell him that
Date My Mom. I actually remember watching that a few times.
I think they were showing reruns last year, at least, I saw a dating show involving parents once.
I think the controversial part is where the parents are asking incredibly sexist question or have very sexist standards.
from what's in the article it doesn't seem like westerner parents wouldn't do the same thing
