Aaron Swartz, Co-Founder of Reddit Commits Suicide
Computer activist Aaron H. Swartz committed suicide in New York City yesterday, Jan. 11, according to his uncle, Michael Wolf, in a comment to The Tech. Swartz was 26.
“The tragic and heartbreaking information you received is, regrettably, true,” confirmed Swartz’ attorney, Elliot R. Peters of Kecker and Van Nest, in an email to The Tech.
Swartz was indicted in July 2011 by a federal grand jury for allegedly mass downloading documents from the JSTOR online journal archive with the intent to distribute them. He subsequently moved to Brooklyn, New York, where he then worked for Avaaz Foundation, a nonprofit “global web movement to bring people-powered politics to decision-making everywhere.” Swartz appeared in court on Sept. 24, 2012 and pleaded not guilty.
The accomplished Swartz co-authored the now widely-used RSS 1.0 specification at age 14, was one of the three co-owners of the popular social news site Reddit, and completed a fellowship at Harvard’s Ethics Center Lab on Institutional Corruption. In 2010, he founded DemandProgress.org, a “campaign against the Internet censorship bills SOPA/PIPA.”
I just got into Reddit a couple months ago. Don't really think about what happens behind the scenes.
Aw shit, RIP.
Wow. That's depressing. The guy had a huge profile behind him besides Reddit.
Created RSS when he was 14? Damn.
I wonder who's gonna make a rageface comic about him first.

Well that is impressive and makes most peoples achievements at 14 seem really bad.
i hope he gets buried on reddit island
his gravestone will be a fedora
26 years old?
Shit man RIP
Wow, that is really sad, RIP..
Why would people rate this funny?
RIP
Wait, this is the guy who created RSS feeds?
Oh, wow.. :(
So much potential has been lost.
Fucking online publications...
Hoarding the knowledge.
So that's where all the negative karma actually goes.

Not really, but he helped with it it seems.
Guys, what if this was a murder cover up? What if he was killed and made to looked like he had committed suicide?

yeah man what if the goverment aliens who committed tyranny and 9/11 did it
because they have reason to against the co-founder of reddit

I cant find any actual source for that though other than that hes a member of the RSS working group, and that they released the standard when he was 14
Theres no actual indiction that he was a part of the group back then though
Nice list of assholes right up there in the OP ratings.
A damn shame. RIP.

yeah you make a lot of enemies creating websites and generally being really good at coding, that's why everyone in the Web Design section has a cyanide capsule in case the mafia comes for them

Is this supposed to reinforce the idea that he was murdered?
Weird. Only yesterday was I learning about suicide in criminology.

I don't think that he was murdered. He probably killed himself because of depression.
Maybe he got too much negative karma.
Why did he commit suicide? The article doesn't make it clear at all.
Probably realized the whole situation with the feds was coming to a head. 15 federal offences would mean a killer time behind bars or an outrageously overblown fine in the world of "cybercrime".
