• Stan Lee: Keep Peter Parker Straight & White
In response to ongoing debates as to whether any future big screen representation of Spider-Man might change the character’s ethnicity and/or sexual orientation, the iconic character’s creator Stan Lee says he’d rather the wall-crawler remain white and heterosexual. Lee was questioned on the matter by Newsarama, in light of recent, further revelations from the Sony e-mail hack scandal, revealing that part of Sony’s stipulations of allowing Marvel creative control of the character was that they must not change his race or sexuality, as well as that he must not drink or smoke. Lee admits he has no problem with this: “I wouldn’t mind, if Peter Parker had originally been black, a Latino, an Indian or anything else, that he stay that way. But we originally made him white. I don’t see any reason to change that.” Regarding Spidey’s sexuality, Lee explains, “I think the world has a place for gay superheroes, certainly. But again, I don’t see any reason to change the sexual proclivities of a character once they’ve already been established. I have no problem with creating new, homosexual superheroes. “It has nothing to do with being anti-gay, or anti-black, or anti-Latino, or anything like that. Latino characters should stay Latino. The Black Panther should certainly not be Swiss. “I just see no reason to change that which has already been established when it’s so easy to add new characters. I say create new characters the way you want to. Hell, I’ll do it myself.” Even so, Lee notes that a key part of Spidey’s appeal is that, in costume, he could literally be just about anyone: “What I like about the costume is that anybody reading Spider-Man in any part of the world can imagine that they themselves are under the costume. And that’s a good thing.”
Source. I loved when they decided to use Ultimate Nick Fury instead of the boring Earth-616 one for the MCU. I have a feeling he is going to get a lot of flack for saying this, though.
To be fair, I think there's a difference between changing Spidey from a smart, witty young white kid to a smart, witty young black kid, and changing the Black Panther from a symbol of black equality to... being a white guy who fights for black equality?
Why make peter black when they can just use mile morales.
Why make peter black when they can just use mile morales.
Most likely due to the fact that most people who don't read Marvel comics don't understand that up in till recently, they had a multiverse. Most people associate Spiderman with Peter Parker. Personally, I hope they introduce Miles Morales in the MCU as well, since he is a very interesting character.
Who wouldn't want to watch a gay superhero that shoots white stuff at people?
This is a reason why i like Stan Lee.
God has spoken.
That's stupidly racist, what the fuck Stan? [sp]thanks for setting things straight[/sp]
Why make peter black when they can just use mile morales.
I think that was the point Stan was trying to get across.
Tell that to the fucks that are making that stupid Fantastic Four movie.
Whole heartedly agree. I don't mind the race or sexuality of a character, but if someone is already established, I don't see a reason to change it except for political reasons like being ~progressive~. Like Captain America being Sam Wilson is fine because it's an established character taking up the mantle of Cap; same with Jane Foster. Miles Morales is in an alternate universe. But for Peter Parker to all of a sudden be gay or black just feels contrived. Make new characters, have new characters take up old superhero mantles.
Who wouldn't want to watch a gay superhero that shoots white stuff at people?
Had to be said by the guy with an animated rainbow avatar and a manly furry character. Lol.
No Stan you got it wrong, you HAVE to make Spiderman a black lesbian woman or else you'll anger the snowflakes on the internet!
He's right, there has to be a reason for change for the character. You don't just go changing character's gender/race/name for the hell of it. If you make an established character, stay with how the character originally looks, how he acts, and who he is. Don't go change a character "just cause", because then the results would be making a character we're not familiar with. I would be alright with a black Spiderman, but not black Peter Parker.

Yeah, the guy's got a point. If the character exists one way, there's no need to fundamentally change that character when you can just write up a new character in the same costume. It's why we have female Thor alongside normal Thor, as well as other things like that (isn't Hawkeye gay in one universe?) Anyway, it's a system that makes sense, even while comic timelines rarely do.

But my problem with this is, who wants a completely new superhero who was only created to be a gay version of an existing one? When a character's sexuality/gender/race is made explicit in almost any media, it's often said here that it's a move made for PR purposes only, for the creators to look tolerant and inclusive. But if Marvel came out tomorrow and announced Arachnawoman, a comic about an explicitly lesbian woman fighting crime and balancing her social life and things, would you guys be any more accepting than if they did a full reboot of an established female character with the exact same powers, or even just added onto what was already there as they did with Catwoman? I mean, everyone likes fair representation, but it just seems to me like any approach to that can be read into as pandering. It's far from easy to build a wholly new character up to begin with, and it only gets harder when the creator's motives are bound to be so heavily (perhaps even cynically) scrutinized. I just don't think it's as black and white a decision as Lee's making it out to be is all.
When I said the same about James Bond, I got banned for being a horrible racist.

I don't get why it's a big issue. It's just the dudes skin color and who he fucks. They've changed way more meaningful things than that before.
I can see his point in not changing a pre-existing character. But can he please tell the people making the movies to focus on other heroes. I mean yeah there are the more popular ones but I'd like to see some different ones getting some movie time. Or hell, even new comics or cartoons or something. I can only take so much content focused solely on the Avengers as the MCU built them up to be.
When I said the same about James Bond, I got banned for being a horrible racist.
Yeah, the inconsistency seems a little weird to me too. People generally agreed that with James Bond, what matters is being true to the character, not true to the original backstory. And especially with superhero comics, backstories and identities change with every reboot. Maybe that's because James Bond has less of an origin story and more of just a personality and appearance, so there's less to retcon. But I certainly wouldn't mind seeing an established character get an identity change. I'm not big into superhero stuff, but, like, if a new movie was about Tony Stark, billionaire Kenyan industrialist, I'd be more curious to see how they use that new identity in a meaningful way than be outraged over the change in race.
When I said the same about James Bond, I got banned for being a horrible racist.
But a Black James Bond would be a terrible idea. "Okay we need a man to fit in, that's why we're picking a black man from the UK and sending him to Russia. What do you mean he'll look out of place? What are you, racist?"
I think changing his sexuality, and perhaps to a much lesser degree his race, would have an impact on some of the subtleties of his character. his classical 1950s-esque romantic dynamic with marry jane is important to his character, as is his the generally unremarkable presence/appearance which would be somewhat affected if he were a minority race.
as is his the generally unremarkable presence/appearance which would be somewhat affected if he were a minority race.
They've already made him into a prettyboy, rather than a dorkey Tobey Maguire. I was more annoyed by that.
But a Black James Bond would be a terrible idea.
Dude, Glover's getting too old for this shit.
Wrong Glover, but I'll give you that one.
Dude, Glover's getting too old for this shit.
I meant Donald Glover/Childish Gambino of course, but I'll give you that one. :v:
