Published in the Public Health Nutrition journal, the results reveal that consumers of fast food, compared to those who eat little or none, are 51% more likely to develop depression.
Furthermore, a dose-response relationship was observed. In other words this means that "the more fast food you consume, the greater the risk of depression," explains Almudena Sánchez-Villegas, lead author of the study, to SINC.
The study demonstrates that those participants who eat the most fast food and commercial baked goods are more likely to be single, less active and have poor dietary habits, which include eating less fruit, nuts, fish, vegetables and olive oil. Smoking and working more than 45 hours per week are other prevalent characteristics of this group.
A long-term study
With regard to the consumption of commercial baked goods, the results are equally conclusive. "Even eating small quantities is linked to a significantly higher chance of developing depression," as the university researcher from the Canary Islands points out.
The study sample belonged to the SUN Project (University of Navarra Diet and Lifestyle Tracking Program). It consisted of 8,964 participants that had never been diagnosed with depression or taken antidepressants. They were assessed for an average of six months, and 493 were diagnosed with depression or started to take antidepressants.
This new data supports the results of the SUN project in 2011, which were published in the PLoS One journal. The project recorded 657 new cases of depression out of the 12,059 people analysed over more than six months. A 42% increase in the risk associated with fast food was found, which is lower than that found in the current study.
Sánchez-Villegas concludes that "although more studies are necessary, the intake of this type of food should be controlled because of its implications on both health (obesity, cardiovascular diseases) and mental well-being."
The impact of diet on mental health
Depression affects 121 million people worldwide. This figure makes it one of the main global causes of disability-adjusted life year. Further still, in countries with low and medium income it is the leading cause.
However, little is known about the role that diet plays in developing depressive disorders. Previous studies suggest that certain nutrients have a preventative role. These include group B vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids and olive oil. Furthermore, a healthy diet such as that enjoyed in the Mediterranean has been linked to a lower risk of developing depression.
How depressing.
I get depressed when I finish eating a burger because there's no more burger to eat.
Is it because the people that usually eat fast food for meals are usually poor as shit? And that's depressing.

I just spit mine back out and eat it again. and again.
I didn't get depressed when I ate a Baconator.
while i enjoy eating fast food, i always regret it afterwards
Let me guess, its the Indian scientests who said Red Meat can cause Cancer and Depression.
(Im not kidding, India is known for worshiping cows as if they are gods and apparently hating people who do eat it.)
'Super Size Me' already established this, didn't they?
Probably because its unhealthy, which leads to an unhealthy attitude, mind, and body, at least that's what i figure
Life you makes you depressed too, guess we should boycott life too eh.

I'm sorry, I couldn't help it.
I think I'd be happy if I ate a different fast food meal every day.
At least I'd gain a few pounds, finally...

The stupid in this post.
Doesn't explain my deep, crushing depression.
The stupid in this post.
He's right, but only because there's nothing else that can make you depressed, technically
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they figure this out a few years ago?
I'm depressed I don't buy Maccas more. I do it very often.
I thought this was already well known.
I eat a lot of fast food, and I do get depressed a lot.
The only fast food that depresses me is McDonalds, and that's only because I never sit back and think "I'm glad I ate that, that was delicious" after I'm done.
I remember watching Super Size Me and towards the end, Morgan Spurlock was mentioning how he just felt incredibly sad and depressed a lot, along with just feeling sick in general.
Fast food gives you a temporary high, and too much like any other food will cause adverse effects.
dopamine bitches.
If you eat too much fast food you will be fat, and therefore depressed.
Eating fast food makes me happy because I can hold it by hand and eat like there's no tomorrow. And it's gooooooood.
foods loaded with sugar, salt and fat are addicting and will cause depression if you do not keep eating those said foods regularly, fast food joints rely on that fact and so stuff their food with it as much as possible (even the stuff that doesn't need it).
I haven't touched fast food in a while but I have a bad habit of putting too much salt into my cooking nowadays.
My hypothesis is that depressed people simply just don't feel like cooking their own meal all the time. Because they're fucking depressed.
There was no a proper control group. If you choose a group, and let them know they're studying if X causes depression, I bet most of the time you'll find correlation no matter what you study.
Correlation does not equal causation. Some people eat away their sorrows.
im going to guess that its due to the constant large dopamine releases in the brain from eating fast food (better tasting food = more dopamine release) leading to lower dopamine levels overall which = shitty mood.
The only reason I get depressed with fast food is because I don't get a toy with my McDonalds any more.
Taco Bell is love
