Hello there, just a quick question:
Is there a program to remove instruments from songs?
I need to know if such a program exists for GCSE music.
As I have a fair bit of knowledge on Audio Editing and other media/audio related things I understand that it is very unlikely that a program can do this, if at all.
It doesn't really have to be perfect, it's just to make my performance a little more interesting as I was told I can play along to music as long as it doesn't have the instrument I'm playing in it. (In my case, drums)
I would appreciate any help I get with this, and if the program doesn't exist I'll move on from my original idea and play something else.
Would it count as helping you cheat if I helped you?

If you mean cheat the GCSE, not at all seeing as it isn't even an exam or assessed in any way.
I've only just started GCSE music and everyone has to play solo to battle the nerves and get used to playing in-front of people.
i am also wondering this :D
You best bet is getting a Grade <whatever> Tutor book with a CD that has a backing with the drums removed
-OR-
Guitar pro->Export Midi->Import Into DAW->Mute Drum track->Find Great VSTs for each instrument->Mix->Export->Done
Not really possible to do this without messing up the whole mix badly.
Drums would be very hard to do compared to something like vocals... When removing vocals, you can often remove the sound coming from the very center of the stereo field (where the vocals usually are), or you could silence the frequency range that people sing in (this would have effects on the guitars and other instruments though). Since different drums are usually panned differently, and because each drum has it's own frequency range, either technique would be very hard for drums.
So no, I don't think it's a plausible thing to do.

Yeah, I knew that the Vocals could be removed, I do that through Goldwave.
Thanks for your help anyway everyone, I'll keep this thread open incase something crops up but it looks like I'm going to have to start practicing something else.
Go and find a bunch of people who play insturments, then make them learn the song you want, then jam with them.

Oh, I do all the time I was just wondering if there was a way to do it with a program.
