Okay, here's how this thread goes.
We've all heard about the people who buy missile silos and turn them into homes and what not.
Interesting stuff, but not all of us have millions of dollars to spend.
So, facepunch, discuss what would happen if you were to make a realistically priced personal fallout or bomb shelter.
Post away!

These guys half assed a lot of this stuff, like the air vents... but with some fixing and modification, everything could be up to par. Nothing you can't do on your own with a few tools and materials.

My Contribution
-The shelter will be made out of several large freight shipping containers. They will all be connected so all sections can be accessed while in lockdown.
-These will be buried with 5-8 feet of compacted dirt layered above. Preferably I would like something with around 20 to 50 feet of depth below ground level, but this all depends on if the land has a water level below that depth; construction will be very difficult if I would have to compensate for flooding while building.
- There will be a storage room that will consist of one entire shipping container, and at least one months worth of food and water. Depending on living space available after everything is in place, I may decide to use another one of the sections to house a large water tank with NBC filtration system.
- The area between the roof of the shipping containers and the actual beginning of the compacted dirt will have a layer (or maybe several layers depending on cost) of very thick steel. This will not only help against radiation, but it will somewhat help to keep moisture out of the area directly around the complex, shield against anyone trying to break in, etc.
-Depending on how much it would cost, I may mount the complex on spring shocks to counter any explosions in a worst case scenario, and to give the structure added stability if any dirt collapses around the outside walls. I live in PA, but I just so happen to live less than a mile from a large fault line that has been active in the last 40 years, so I need to take that into consideration.
-The blast doors will be small, and either made by myself, or by a company. They will be able to withstand pressures over 50 PSI, as well as many types of direct explosions. They will be resistant to radiation.

THE AWESOME PART
My bunker will obviously be made out of my passion for survivalism. Regardless of whether or not it is even likely that a situation would force my family and I to enter the shelter and go into lockdown, I will make the most out of this in case it does.
And that means needing a command center. This will consist of a room containing A row of computers assigned to different things such as monitoring cameras, temperature throughout the complex, airflow, electrical data, interior and exterior pressure, entrances, etc. I will also have some computers monitoring as much outside communications as possible. I do not know how I will do this if internet lines are down, but I will figure something out. I will also have a few arrays of communications equipment. I have a ton of communications equipment in my garage, so I do not need to buy this stuff. I know many codes for talking over CB shortwave radio, and I have amplifiers as well as antennas that can be exposed through the ground level.
Pictures Of What I Will Put In The Command Room
The seismograph will not be an expensive one. They sell classroom and home seismographs for around 200 dollars. This will help out with a lot of things.

Stop your pointless bitching. There's several hundred people on facepunch right now, and I am pretty sure there is a good reason that most of them aren't bitching: who gives a fuck?
You are a poor example of a righteous person if you feel compelled to go out of your way and tell people who you can simply ignore to stop what they are doing.
Not to mention, I usually get a good reception in my threads, even when only a few people reply.
If you really do feel that you can not handle someone posting several threads among thousands, then you may need help. The space my thread title takes up is about 1 to 2 cm on the first page, there is plenty of room to skip over that gap.
Have a nice day :)
That is awesome
If you think that is awesome, this will really get you going- it is not underground yet, but just imagine this entire complex under 10-20 feet of dirt. Skip through a few minutes to get to the tour of the interior.

cool.
It would be interesting setting up a house based underground that doubles as a fallout shelter.
I'd take mine NORAD style but a section of the inside would be sort of like a suite.
I would probably die because I would be too lazy to organize something like that.
I think that in the future, buildings will be built down, not up, when things get too crowded.
Imagine waking up in the morning, stepping outside to the bustling city streets under lamps. Its not night, you're merely 50 feet underground. You buy some food from the grocery store, which receives food grown/made at the surface. Free public transportation cars on rails are run by computers,so that there can be no accidents which could pose a much bigger threat underground, plus the threat of carbon monoxide poisoning has lead to safer fuel alternatives, like Hydrogen, which emits water vapor. There is no war underground, no civilian casualties because of war, and the president is in a secret bunker somewhere. There is almost no crime, as police force is stricter and increased, because any poisonous gasses that could be released pose a bigger threat where there is no fresh air. Air itself, is pumped from the surface, but it will not be pumped in if anything dangerous in it is detected. If there is some dangerous gas in the air, backup containers start pumping in air, and they can last for three months.
Seems like the future to me, I mean, in a century or two, the whole world will be like New York: Full of people, and Personal Space doesn't exist. Buildings everywhere.
I say screw shelters; be on the offensive. Get yourself an armored fighting vehicle and go around scavenging for resources with it. In dire times like nuclear fallout or any other catastrophe, an object as large as an above-ground shelter would obviously attract attention.
With an M-113 or some other similar vehicle, you can setup an outpost in the woods and reposition it if need be.
Be mechanized, God damn it. Make Mike Sparks proud.

I was merely using this as an example. There really is nothing useful about coming into a thread and being nasty toward someone who never said a word to you, let alone did not do or say anything negative.
You are an ass.

I remember seeing something on the discovery channel about building entire houses out of these containers. It seemed really cool because you could buy prebuild rooms, and since they were all big metal crates they would be really easy to stack/remove, it was like building a house out of prebuild blocks.

Yeah they still do it, there are actually some sites that you can go onto which let you select prebuilt designs or custom designs. It is definitely worth it if you want to save some money. My buddy lived in one in Iraq on Al Asad Airbase for almost a year, and he said it was home sweet home inside. There's a million things you can do with them.
I'd buy a gun if the world ended. Because then I could shoot one of these assholes and take their bunkers for myself.
I like to look at bomb shelters and shit sometimes to imagine what it'd be like. The Community shelter video you had just showed pictures of this companies shelters. Check out the details on them there.
If I was ever a billionaire, I'd definitely buy a bomb shelter. But I'd try and find a company who builds them for the Government, I've yet to see a single civilian bomb shelter company that can even make a decent looking website. Kind of makes me doubt their technical experience.
I don't live in america so i don't have to worry about terrorist threats.
Have some boxes to build your bunker there mister
As fallout/bomb shelters these would fail. This shit would be brushed aside like it's nothing
I have a concrete enclosed area underground with a minifridge, microwave, computer, and xbox. It's my basement.
I'm set, bring it on, russians!
[editline]03:22AM[/editline]
all these shipping containers, you would think the gmod noobs have been here!
As fallout/bomb shelters these would fail. This shit would be brushed aside like it's nothing
These aren't blast shelters, so they don't need to withstand a shitload of kinetic energy. They just need to be structurally sound, and shielded from radiation.

One comment about rating me dumb that I actually appreciate. This was pretty funny.
Where in PA do you live? Assuming you mean Pennsylvania.

Holy shit, I'd love to work there.
I like the idea of building/having a working bunker under my house.
Seems like a cool hobby.

Why would you need a seismograph?
