Hitchens confronted his disease in part by writing, bringing the same unsparing insight to his mortality that he had directed at so many other subjects.Over the years, Hitchens' caustic attention was directed at a broad range of subjects, including Henry Kissinger, Prince Charles, Bob Hope, Michael Moore, the Dalai Lama and Mother Teresa.
:(
We have lost a great man
Fuck, this sucks. The man was so mesmerizing, especially in his many debates.
Goddammit! I was hoping he'd last at least through the new year...
rip
Well, it's not like this wasn't expected. I don't agree with many of his views, but death is rarely a good thing. I'm sure he had family that is mourning.
Wow...:(

Rest In Peace. I can't say I know too much about the guy, but it's still sad.
Wow, didn't expect this at all, I was just watching his lectures earlier today.
:(
Goddammit.
The only position that leaves me with no cognitive dissonance is atheism. It is not a creed. Death is certain, replacing both the siren-song of Paradise and the dread of Hell. Life on this earth, with all its mystery and beauty and pain, is then to be lived far more intensely: we stumble and get up, we are sad, confident, insecure, feel loneliness and joy and love. There is nothing more; but I want nothing more. ~ Christopher Hitchens
Very disappointed to have heard the news, even though I was expecting it. One of the most ruthlessly eloquent intellectuals of our time, and for me personally a champion of reasoning and free thinking. Rest in peace. I don't even know how many hours I spent watching videos of his debates and public discourses.
It all went so fast. It is a very sad day to have lost such a fine writer and orator.
Reading his wikipedia article, this sounds like a fascinating guy, why is he not ever talked about? Is it because he actually was an individual in his beliefs and not some left or right, black and white person?
he was a brilliant writer influential to both marxists and atheists. but most of all he was known for his great punchlines:
Wow, I was just reading God is not great. this man is my hero
It was inevitable, but it doesn't make it any less of a tragedy. RIP.
This is a great loss not only to the atheist movement but to humanity as a whole
Oh shit, I barely knew about this guy, but he sounds great from all of these videos. For fuck's sake why couldn't we sacrifice the pope or gingrich or romney instead!
I'm not a reading man, the only books I own are school books for my college courses but I'm inclined to go buy his book upon hearing this tragic news. We have lost a very intelligent man who was not afraid to speak his mind just because it tread on a few toes.

[editline]16th December 2011[/editline] Going to go buy his 'God is not great' book on my kindle right now.
Damn, he was a good debater, even if you didn't agree with his views.
Well shit
I've honestly never heard of Hitchens until now. I'm a fairly new atheist so I've only really read the works of Dawkins the past year or so. Now that I've spent the past hour or so watching his videos on Youtube, I can pretty much conclude that he's a fucking genius.
Was just skimming through and saw the thread title, had to double take and my heart sank when I confirmed I'd read what I thought I had. What a shame.
he was a brilliant writer influential to both marxists
how was that?
First death since Carl Sagan and Douglas Adams that felt like a punch to the gut.
