It's true, The Pirate Bay has agreed to being purchased by Global Gaming Factory (owner of a network of Internet cafes and gaming centers) for 60 million Swedish Krona or roughly $7.8 million. According to a press release, "GGF intends to launch new business models that allow compensation to the content providers and copyright owners." In a post on TPB's blog, the rogue file sharing site says that the project has been in the works for many years and should help evolve the site while trying to stay the same. Here's how they put it:
"If the new owners will screw around with the site, nobody will keep using it. That's the biggest insurance one can have that the site will be run in the way that we all want to. And - you can now not only share files but shares with people. Everybody can indeed be the owner of The Pirate Bay now. That's awesome and will take the heat of us."
We'll have to wait and see how this pans out but it certainly smacks of a Napster v2 like situation at first blush. Assuming of course the deal closes by August as anticipated.
Update: As a hint, perhaps, of what's to come, GGF also announced the purchase of Peerialism, a software company responsible for developing what GGF calls "P2P 2.0" file sharing technology.
Well don't have much to say, pretty interesting nevertheless.
The post on TPB.
TPB might change owner
Yes, it's true.
News reached the press today in Sweden - The Pirate Bay might get aquired by Global Gaming Factory X AB.
A lot of people are worried. We're not and you shouldn't be either!
TPB is being sold for a great bit underneath it's value if the money would be the interesting part. It's not. The interesting thing is that the right people with the right attitude and possibilities keep running the site.
As all of you know, there's not been much news on the site for the past two-three years. It's the same site essentially. On the internets, stuff dies if it doesn't evolve. We don't want that to happen.
We've been working on this project for many years. It's time to invite more people into the project, in a way that is secure and safe for everybody. We need that, or the site will die. And letting TPB die is the last thing that is allowed to happen!
If the new owners will screw around with the site, nobody will keep using it. That's the biggest insurance one can have that the site will be run in the way that we all want to. And - you can now not only share files but shares with people. Everybody can indeed be the owner of The Pirate Bay now. That's awesome and will take the heat of us.
The old crew is still around in different ways. We will also not stop being active in the politics of the internets - quite the opposite. Now we're fueling up for going into the next gear. TPB will have economical muscles to let people evolve it. It will team up with great technicians to evolve the protocols. And we, the people interested in more than just technology, will have the time to focus on that. It's win-win-win.
The profits from the sale will go into a foundation that is going to help with projects about freedom of speech, freedom of information and the openess of the nets. I hope everybody will help out in that and realize that this is the best option for all. Don't worry - be happy!

This is gonna be interesting
So what, is it still for illegal torrents, or just legal downloads?
I assume the name "Pirate Bay" would be sort of misleading if it was only for legal stuff. I can see it crashing: Napster style. :/
Umm... Good bye free stuff?
This seems like a legitimate company, so they will probably get rid of ALL illegal things... Fuuuuck.
Haha, bitching incoming
inb4 poor people whining.
Wow, i never thought i'd see the day.
But very intresting.
This affects me in no way whatsoever.
You think dial-up allows me to care about P2P file sharing?
Anyways, I guess this could get interesting.
I bet some people are gonna regret donating to them.
oh SHIT
But...
Now I have to use Demonoid.
Fuck, where do I download my porn now?!

You living under a rock or something. They were just fined a huge amount and whilst the site itself may not be illegal, distributing software via torrents is.
You can't remember a few URLs?
Anyway, let's all torrent Smartlaunch and CyberCafePro, the software subsidaries of Global Gaming Factory produces from TPB - it's actually on the tracker :v:

No, its because people download so that they don't feel like they wasted money. Or they don't want to waste money. Not everyone who torrents are poor.
So you don't have it in 1080p HD - big deal?

The judge was far from impartial. He was a member of Swedish Association of Copyright (SFU), sits on the board of the Swedish Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (SFIR).
rip the pirate bay
Great news for other torrenting sites, but GGF has made a real blunder of an acquisition. Unless they're going to leave the site unchanged or at least leave the "pirate" nature of the site intact the pirate bay is going to lose so much of it's traffic within a month.
It's a damn shame.
This will just turn into napster.
:yarr:
What TPB is doing is legal
OOOHHH yeah because only the people uploading/downloading are doing illegal things. Don't they say that it is the responsibility of the user to not upload illegal things?
The Pirate Bay just fucked themselves.
ABANDON SHIP!
Don't really give a damn, there are much better p2p sites anyway.
Yay now I can pay to get viruses in my computer :downs:
