Thought about putting this in LMAO pics but then knew better Source: http://www.waitbutwhy.com/2013/08/putting-time-in-perspective.html?m=1
I'm too sober for this D:
that's pretty terrifying
For some reason I expected a yo mama joke at the end.
Thinking about this shit makes me want to go insane. I mean, humanity and everything we've experienced and everything we know seems like a whole lot, but once you look at the big picture, we are as insignificant as a mite on a planet
i'm so small
Everything we do is insignificant ... lets go blow something up

This puts things in perspective. Its insane how humanity has discovered so much and that so many people still refuse to accept that the universe is not 8000 years old.
i think the best part about this horrible nihilistic reality we've discovered is that you can reasonably just say "eh, life goes on" at any point and be completely right
Thinking about this shit makes me want to go insane. We're less than the proportion of a mite to a planet.
I'm not sure what the picture is trying to tell us about our mortality and insignificance, or the death of our Sun? What the hell. We will overcome all of these so-called serious problems and we will achieve relative immortality, and we will see ourselves to the end of time, or.. die trying, which is also a possibility.

Somehow, having the universe just sit down and die doesn't sit right...
Yeah, everything is eventually doomed. What are you going to do, cry about it? Enjoy the brief sliver of existence you have before everything winks out for good. I mean, either that or figure out dimension jumping or time travel.
I wanna see a non-logarithmic chart of the stelliferous universe compared to the dark universe and all its warm-up stages.
we've advanced so much through the past thousand and even hundred years that it blows my mind
i liked it, but i don't care about an american 30 year old's life so far
Welp, we may as well just kill everyone
Welp, we may as well just kill everyone
nobody will even notice
Somehow, having the universe just sit down and die doesn't sit right...
We know so little about the universe that we might still find a way of saving it or running away or something
Jesus christ if we've achieved this much in the last 100 years, or even the last few thousand, imagine how much we will achieve in the next few million years. Assuming we survive that long.
Talking about time, there's this rather depressing website: http://theblog.de/projects/carpediem/ It estimates I have 3146 weeks left. Which is 723 months. it's even more depressing when you enable both sleep and work.
I can sorta of explain the heat death thing to people. Basically everything in the universe gives off energy, and if there's energy being used, then there's energy being wasted, enough is heat. Heat is useless and so eventually everything in the universe will be dissolved into useless heat.
Reminds me of The Scale of the Universe
I do not find this depressing, but exhilarating and amazing. It's the closest I can get to "spirituality".
The first six slides (up to the 90 year life slide) make me feel like so much of my life has been wasted so far. I need to do more. It really puts it into perspective for me. I need to do more, because I'm 20, and saying I only live until 80 or so, I only have 3 more times to get shit done. Thank you, OP for this realization. Otherwise, very cool diagram.
I do not find this depressing, but exhilarating and amazing. It's the closest I can get to "spirituality".
The graphs in the OP do a good job of illustrating what kind of immense torment an eternal afterlife would be. If you believe in heaven/hell/etc this is how long you'll live: Except that's just an infinitely small slice of it. [editline]21st September 2013[/editline] And unrelated, it's only presenting half the story by not expanding downwards in time as well. What humans consider a short period of time is a lifetime to other living organisms.
Everything we do is insignificant ... lets go blow something up
Your attitude is either a perfect example of why humanity's dying, or why it's still around. Either way...I'm on board with it.
