Besides HTML, there were some other amusing findings: 77% of respondents could not identify what SEO means. SEO stands for "Search-Engine Optimization" 27% identified "gigabyte" as an insect commonly found in South America. A gigabyte is a measurement unit for the storage capacity of an electronic device. 42% said they believed a "motherboard" was "the deck of a cruise ship." A motherboard is usually a circuit board that holds many of the key components of a computer. 23% thought an "MP3" was a "Star Wars" robot. It is actually an audio file. 18% identified "Blu-ray" as a marine animal. It is a disc format typically used to store high-definition videos. 15% said they believed "software" is comfortable clothing. Software is a general term for computer programs. 12% said "USB" is the acronym for a European country. In fact, USB is a type of connector. TBH I am not surprised most didn't know what a SEO was [editline]4th March 2014[/editline] Also late
Everyone needs to get checked for HTMLs
A friend of mine ODed on SQL injections.
Oh my god ah man society is doomed son of a...
I can see some of it, but you would think that MP3, USB, and for god's sakes Blu-ray (its not like it isn't in ads every 5 seconds). Those are fairly common everyday things, even among tech-illiterate people. But then again, that's probably why they are tech illiterate.
I'm going to be honest, I didn't, and won't remember, what SEO means. Also
Despite the incorrect answers, 61% of the respondents said it is important to have a good knowledge of technology in this day and age.
and yet a lot of people ask "Why do people say Americans are dumb?"
and yet a lot of people ask "Why do people say Americans are dumb?"
Aaaand thread derail in 3, 2, 1....
and yet a lot of people ask "Why do people say Americans are dumb?"
You'd get similar results no matter what country if you asked people over 35.
1 in 10 Australians are actually kangaroos in disguise.

I'm going to assume most replies were jokes.
I'm going to assume most replies were jokes.
obviously, i mean this article is a joke in itself even though it's probably true. Which is sad and hilarious at the same time
isn't STD a programming language?
Perhaps they should've expanded their study beyond the elderly.
I never knew about SEO. Only thing I know about SEO is that it's a gas-station in Finland. Apparently a part of a bigger thing as well: http://www.seo.fi/
My first thought was like: what html has to do with a library from C++? But then I googled... I guess profession affects me more then I though. But yeah, all these studies are so useless and dumb. Just walking down the street and asking people about html surely gives you a lot of priceless social information.
1 in 12 polar bears are employed by a bus company
So 1 in 120 Russians is a bus driving polar bear?
SEO made me think "sony entertainment online" but that's SOE
You'd get similar results no matter what country if you asked people over 35.
when it comes to that age ti'd not surprise me a lot of people haven't touched a computer in ever
I've never heard of anyone mistaking HTML for an STD.
Dunno about html but css is an std for sure. Godawful thing.
"77% of respondents could not identify what SEO means. SEO stands for "Search-Engine Optimization"" Who honestly gives a shit? Blu-Ray, USB and MP3 I can understand being more surprising that people don't know, given their ubiquity in everyday life, but who among regular consumers would give a rat's arse about SEO enough to know the acronym?
I'm not surprised at all. Not everyone needs to know what HTML is
I'm not surprised at all. Not everyone needs to know what HTML is
They don't need to know it, but if I see a word that I don't understand/not know the meaning, I go to a dictionary/search it on Google. As I said, they don't need to, but they could. Internet isn't a new thing anymore, having some basic knowledge of it is very helpful. (At least enough knowledge to know it's something about computers, rather than an STD.)
100 in 100 Steam users think CSS is a game.
