Defense contractors, however, are trying to turn the US Army into a lethal Apple / Android force with soldier-centric apps. Harris Corp. has a tablet app in the works that allows soldiers to control IP cameras on UAVs for more pertinent intel on the ground while simultaneously sending that information to command centers anywhere in the world. Meanwhile, Intelligent Software Solutions aims to bring mapping mashups to the battlefield (no purpose-built device needed) with an app that combines smartphones' geolocation with historical data to show troops what's been going down in the area -- from IED explosions to insurgent arrests. Best of all, these apps lower training costs since most warriors are already fluent in Android or iOS and the consumer handhelds can be cheaply ruggedized to replace the more robust $10,000 units in the field today. Should protective measures fail, the devices' (relatively) low replacement cost makes them "almost disposable." It says it in the article, it'll give them battlefield info and let them view UAV Camera's.
using a tablet to control anything requiring military precision? :frog: when you consider it, while a tablet might work for only the control and viewing of cameras, you can have laptops of similar size that are much more functional. that said, having phones with special military apps on them would be cool seeing how small phones are.
Sweet! Cutting down that budget, army.
Wanna start WW3? Theres a app for that.

Soon Apple can use GPS in the phones to see where U.S. army ops are taking place. And then Apple was PMC
Angry birds that is connected to their artillery.

So can I buy these apps? Predator drone app.
As terrible as the idea sounds, it isn't really. Modern smart phones are just more powerful PDA's and there have been PDA type devices with military uses. There is no real problem with using off the shelf hardware for things if they can do it, its probably cheaper than paying a company millions to make some hardware to do one thing.

Awesome, they can multi-task by controlling a UAV and talking to their loved ones!
I can see this going badly. "I was just trying to text my girlfriend!" "You just ordered an air strike on that poor town!"
