B.C. transgender girl, 10, makes formal request to have gender removed from her birth certificate
A Comox transgender girl and her family have made a formal request to remove gender from her birth certificate, which they hope would improve equality for transgender people across the province.
A lawyer for the Cunningham family said there is no precedent for such a request in B.C. However, if the request is granted it would open the door for others to do the same.
If the Vital Statistics Agency, which issues birth certificates in B.C., denies the request, the family plans to file a human rights complaint, said barbara findlay, the Cunninghams’ lawyer.
“There is an apparently neutral rule that everyone’s birth certificate has either an M or an F, which has a disproportionately negative effect on a group of people who are historically disadvantaged — and that’s anyone whose gender doesn’t fit neatly into an M or F and stay that way,” findlay said.
For the Cunningham family, the birth certificate change would mean one less barrier to full acceptance of their transgender daughter by society.
Harriette, who is 10, says she always knew she was a girl, even if she was born with a boy’s body. She transitioned in September 2012 and took the name Harriette last December. She feels anxious every time she must present official identification, which still says she is a boy.

did you set a google alert for "transgender" or something
Good on her.
In my opinion birth certificates should have both sex and gender on it.
In my opinion birth certificates should have both sex and gender on it.
In my opinion birth certificates should have just sex on it.
"historically disadvantaged" what bullshit
In my opinion birth certificates should have just sex on it.
When they are born yes, but I mean an optional field that can be added if they transition.
When they are born yes, but I mean an optional field that can be added if they transition.
But if its a separate field wouldn't they be discriminated against?
In my opinion birth certificates should have just sex on it.
But, they already do?
[editline]banana[/editline]
Dumbs? Really? You guys know that male and female are physiological sexes and not genders, right?
In my opinion birth certificates should have both sex and gender on it.
yea um
don\t think the trans community is supportive of that at all?
"... neutral rule that everyone’s birth certificate has either an M or an F ..."
Considering the fact that it says whatever part the baby has when the doctor pulls them from their mother, it CAN'T be some other third category. It's a classification for when you are born, and if you really want to be the other gender later in life, then all the power to you, but it's called a "Birth" certificate, not a "X Stage In My Life" certificate.
And eventually she'll be able to get a drivers license, and possibly a passport if she needs/chooses, having those will make showing a birth certificate almost completely unnecessary, save for a few certain situations.

he means they should keep it that way (i assume)
If Facepunch wants to have any kind of progressive reputation on the Internet, it needs to stop being full of such bigoted fucks like you are all being right now. When it comes to gay rights, you have people bashing Christians, which by the way is also bigoted, and touting their support of gay rights and allowing them to marry and all that good stuff that we should be supporting.
Yet when it comes to transgender issues, you got people left and right talking about how being transgender is disgusting and unnatural, spamming posts in support of transgenderism with dumbs and funnies. It's sickening and makes my blood boil. I'm ashamed to be on the same forum as people with such a bigoted and immature mindset.

I think you're forgetting that transgender children can tell their gender by the time they are 3 years old. Rather than making these children decide their gender when born we should make the entire human race withhold their gender until puberty to make these children feel better and not discriminated against.

Man, get a load of this guy.
I have nothing against transgender people, but isn't age 10 a bit young for a kid to make that kind of decision? They haven't even hit puberty at that point.

oh dear you've said the taboo words, prepare yourself for hundreds of dumbs and replies
but I do agree with you nonetheless

No children from the age of 3 are completely capable of deciding their gender and communicating this to adults; this is backed up by the world's leading scientists and smartest doctors who have researched this for many years.

Debate #9104 on "how young is too young for a child to decide their gender identity" in 3...2...

When a child is 3 they hardly even know what "gender" is.
Yeah I hate being on a forum where not everybody thinks the same way I do as well. [/sarcasm
Funnily enough, his point is that the transgender community is ironically hostile to anyone who doesn't think exactly like they do.

are you drunk or are you being sarcastic?

The worlds smartest doctors disagree with you (please disregard any criticisms of the doctor because he is really smart): http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/tvradio/programmes/horizon/dr_money_prog_summary.shtml

"Don't like us? You deserve to die!"
If I had a penny for each death threat thrown around in these threads, i'd be rich. Also, I think we should ban transgender news, because not even one of these threads will not end up in a 13 page long flamewar.
are you drunk or are you being sarcastic?
Does it sound to you like the gender of a 3 year old is something to laugh about? I hope you know that 100% of these kids that don't get surgery will commit suicide.

Its more like you get stupid questions or statements like "I doubt a 10 year old knows if they are trans or not" when its been proven with research that they do. Or how you said its absurd that a trans person wants to be called a different name other than their established one. It gets annoying and when you run into massive bigots who just ignore the facts or outright are transaphobic as shit, you dont want to try anymore without sounding like an asshole. If people would just ask politely about questions about it, there would be much less stress.

maybe you should stay away from transgender threads considering your history of harassing people on this forum

Pretty much this all the way. I've never seen a transgendered person being hostile for someone " not thinking the way they do. " They're just fed up with people being close minded. They just want acceptance.

Lol says the psychopath that personally traced a transgender girl here who was in the closet and told all of her friends, just because she was trans.
