More than half of Turkey suffers massive power outage

[quote]Power outages in Turkey have caused chaos in more than a dozen cities across the country, affecting train services and causing flights to divert, officials said.
The outages on Tuesday led to the cancellation of service on Istanbul's metro and train lines to the capital, Ankara, with a number of reports on social media of flights being cancelled or delayed.
Officials confirmed that a glitch in Turkey's electricity power transmission network caused the power cut, and the Turkish Electricity Transmission company said "technical inspections" were under way to restore power, the Associated Press news agency reported.
Turkey's Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said all possible causes of the outage were being investigated and did not rule out sabotage, but said that trouble with transmission lines was the most likely reason for the problem.

The electric network is quite complicated and naturally unstable system and requires quite close and through control to stay functional. If the control fudges up and fails to keep it stable, the entire thing can crash, often with quite destructive effects.
I don't know if blackouts are a regular occurrence, but during both trips I took to Turkey a few years back there were city wide outages and when my friend went there was another then too.
