That is not really a Minecraft reference. A Notch is a V-shaped indentation so it makes sense.
Yeah this doesn't really look like a minecraft reference to me. I mean if it is then it's pretty poor.
I saw this when I was doing the main quest I was like meh its a pick axe so the game isnt to tough on people climbing up here.
I mean hell that ore is rare right ? Would be pretty mean to make the player climb back down again.

Just the name itself seemed like a pretty shaky coincidence but the fact that it is enchanted and that it's found in such a place makes it seem more plausible.
I think it would be awesome if they really did a good Minecraft easter egg
Just to make it up for the whole "Scrolls" lawsuit shit that was going on a while ago
Notch also posted (on Twitter I think) that he would make a Todd Howarded pickaxe. Probably a joke though.

And when you pick it up 4 random lawyers spawn that insta kill you

Don't make it instant kill. Have them throw scrolls at you.

Once you collected 10 scrolls you are teleported to Quake in a tournament and you play as Notch versus the cheating Todd Howard
Expected a creeper painting or something.
Normally I may not think anything of it but the peculiar placement and enchantment makes it seem legit
I can see the reference. Lots of ore, a unique pickaxe with Notched in it's name. I mean come on guys. Why would Bethesda put a pickaxe in the game that's unique like that? They only have one purpose and that is to mine, so to make a unique one and not have it reference anything seems pointless.

Found this my first day playing, might be a minecraft easter egg.

Needs a bow.
I want to find carvings of creepers or something, that would be freaking amazing! Though highly doubtful.

Why would that be minecraft easter egg?

Oh a skeleton with a pickaxe that must be related to Minecraft.

The pickaxes are usually near ore. And considering there are unique woodcutting axes and things they would obviously do a pickaxe one aswell. The enchanted woodcutting axes all have unique names aren't a reference to anything so why would this be just because it has Notched in it's name? It's not like that word was invented by minecraft or doesn't make sense on it.
I think the thing on some hammers used for pulling nails out is a notch.

Even if it was originally a coincidence, there's no way in hell that Bethesda didn't notice it

It's a pickaxe, they are used for mining. Obviously it would be near ore. Being enchanted and having a fitting name does not mean it is minecraft related. All enchanted items have unique names - It just means the pickaxe has a notch (Which is a real thing and not exclusive to minecraft).
Well, it does help you to mine and raise your smithing abilities, mine and craft?
well his name is "NOTCH" and it's picked that called notched pickaxe
notch
notch ed pickaxe
notch also's make a game named minecraft that lets you mine ore's as well as you can make
pickaxes in that game so i thing it's real weird coicindince
So it seems it didn't have anything to do with Minecraft.
I can't say I'm disappointed by that. Skyrim is fucking awesome.
It might, hasn't been disproven. Email Bethesda.
Wow those guys are not funny at all.

At this point in the game there is literally no reason to be using a pick axe or a lumberjack's axe even if it was enchanted. The Notched Pickaxe is fairly useless besides for mining, and it doesn't even give a bonus to that like double ores so why make it enchanted? It's not even worth a decent amount of gold. Its obviously an easter egg, the relations are too large to be a coincidence. If it was just for players who had enough bad luck not to have a pickaxe on them at the time, then why not just make it a normal one. Besides the fact that the whole place is literally the very highest point in possibly all of Tamriel, you have to do some rock climbing to get to that area. And for what? A few ore veins? No.

A notch is a V-shapped indentation. Therefore a Notched pickaxe is a pickaxe with a V-shaped indentation like on some hammers. Nothing to do with minecraft at all.

Because there is no "that point in the game" you can go straight there after doing the first quest if you wanted. It's not an easter egg. There are enchanted versions of other non-weapon weapons (Such as Poachers axe) and other weapons which aren't too useful (E.g Woodsmans friend), are you saying those are easter eggs aswell?
They aren't just a few ore veins, they are quite rare ones.
